Concept of NetBEUI Protocol

There are still some differences between LAN protocols and Internet protocols. Now let's get to know the NetBEUI protocol. In the following article, readers will find that there are not many uses of this protocol, because it has a large defect. Here we will write a foreshadowing to check whether we can find it at last.

◆ NetBEUI protocol concept.

NETBEUI is a non-routing protocol developed for IBM for carrying NETBIOS communications. NETBEUI lacks the routing and network-layer addressing functions, which is both its biggest advantage and its biggest disadvantage. Because it does not require additional network addresses and network-layer headers and tails, it is fast and effective and suitable for small workgroup environments that only individual networks or the entire environment are bridging.

Because routing is not supported, NETBEUI will never become the main protocol of the enterprise network. The only address in the NETBEUI frame is the data link layer media access control MAC address. The vro forwards the frame to the final destination based on the network address, but the NETBEUI frame does not have this information.

The bridge is responsible for forwarding and communication between networks according to the data link layer address, but there are many disadvantages. Because all broadcast communication must be forwarded to each network, the scalability of the bridge is poor. NETBEUI includes the recording of Broadcast Communication and relies on it to resolve naming conflicts. Generally, the number of NETBEUI bridging hosts is less than 100.

In recent years, networks dependent on second-layer switches have become more common. The entire conversion environment reduces the network utilization, even though the broadcast is still forwarded to each host in the network. In fact, the combined use of 350-BASE-T Ethernet allows the conversion of the NetBIOS network to expand to hosts, in order to prevent Broadcast Communication from becoming a serious problem.

In network management, configuring proper network protocols for machines often improves the running quality of the entire network. NetBEUI is a network protocol that we are no longer familiar. Especially in some small-sized campus network management in primary and secondary schools, we usually take the NetBEUI protocol with low system resources and high efficiency as the first choice, or use it with the TCP/IP protocol. In this way, the entire network can be optimized.

◆ Features of the NetBEUI protocol.

NetBEUI (NetBIOS Extended User Interface) was developed by IBM in 1985. It is a small, efficient, and fast communication protocol. NetBEUI is also Microsoft's favorite communication protocol, so it is called the "mother tongue" of communication protocols in all Microsoft products ".

Microsoft chose NetBEUI as its communication protocol in its early products, such as DOS, LAN Manager, Windows 3.x, and Windows for Workgroup. In today's mainstream Microsoft products, such as Windows 95/98 and Windows NT, NetBEUI has become its inherent default protocol. Someone has positioned WinNT as the operating system of the low-end network server, which is directly related to Microsoft's product dependency on NetBEUI. NetBEUI is designed for a small local area network composed of several to more than PCs. It does not have the function of cross-network segment work, that is, NetBEUI does not have the routing function.

If you have installed Multiple NICs on a server or want to connect two LAN devices, such as routers, you cannot use the NetBEUI protocol. Otherwise, the devices connected to each network card of different NICs are connected to one network segment, and communication between different LAN devices is not allowed. Although NetBEUI has many unsatisfactory features, it also has advantages that are not available in other protocols. Among the three communication protocols, NetBEUI occupies the least memory and does not require any configuration in the network. Especially today, Microsoft products have almost exclusive PC operating systems. It is suitable for beginners of the majority of networks.

◆ Relationship between NetBEUI and NetBIOS.

Careful readers may have discovered that NetBEUI contains a network interface standard NetBIOS. NetBIOSNetwork Basic Input/Output System, which is a Basic network Input/Output System developed by IBM in 1983, the purpose is to develop a communication specification that is only used on a small LAN.

The network is composed of PCs with a maximum of 30 users. It highlights the word "small. Later, IBM found many defects in NetBIOS, so it was improved in 1985 and launched the NetBEUI protocol. Then, Microsoft used NetBEUI as the basic communication protocol for its client/server network system, and further expanded and improved it. The most representative is the addition of a part in NetBEUI called SMBServer Message Blocks, Server Message Block) to reduce network congestion.

Therefore, the NetBEUI protocol is sometimes referred to as the "SMB protocol ". NetBIOS and NetBEUI are often confused. In fact, NetBIOS can only be regarded as the interface specification of a network application, and is the basis of NetBEUI. It does not have strict communication protocol functions. NetBEUI is a network transmission protocol based on NetBIOS.
