ECryptfs is a POSIX-compatible commercial-level stack-encrypted Linux File System. It provides some advanced key management rules. ECryptfs writes the encryption element in the header of each encryption file, so the encrypted file can be decrypted using the key even if it is copied to another host. Consider eCryptfs as a kind of "gnupgfs". eCryptfs is a kind of Linux File System. Its kernel components are already part of the Linux kernel after 2.6.19.

Install eCryptfs in Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid

Sudo aptitude install ecryptfs-utils

After installation, you need to create an encrypted directory:

Mkdir ~ /Personal

Use the following command to make sure that other people cannot access this folder:

Chmod 700 ~ /Personal

Mount ecryptfs to the Personal folder:

Sudo mount-t ecryptfs ~ /Personal ~ /Personal

During the process, the system will prompt you to answer a few questions:

Select the key type for the newly created file:

Press "1" to select the Mount Password

Enter and confirm your mount password.

 

Select the number of encrypted digits.

The default value is [16]. If you do not know what to choose, press enter to select the default value. Then set plaintext passthrough (I don't know how to translate it properly)

Select 'y' if you want to clear unencrypted files in the folder. Otherwise, select 'n '.

Now you can see that a Personal drive has been mounted in your main folder.
