Article Title: Can Linux and Android be integrated ?. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.
At the LinuxCon conference, why is Google Android code not part of Linux a hot topic. One of the discussions was so intense that a group member had an attack and called a radical attendee "shut up" and asked him to leave.
Online and offline debates, for example, are typical scenes of intense debate over the relationship between Android and Linux. Although Google Android code is no longer a mainstream Linux kernel, Google Android is still regarded as a great success story for Mobile Linux. This fact has prompted Linux supporters to argue about why Google is moving away from the mainstream Linux kernel and whether it is hurting Linux. However, as with the arguments of many of these basic issues, it is a multi-level problem that allows the existence of many different points of view.
According to the group member, the core issue lies in some of Google Android's power management code called WakeLocks.
Red Hat engineer Matthew Garret said Google has made some efforts to integrate its WakeLocks code into the mainstream Linux kernel. However, he said that mainstream Linux kernel developers do not understand WakeLocks, which has brought about a series of complicated debates; they have slowed down the implementation process of various possible ways to solve power management problems.
For Garret, this is not the ideal result. He also said that many developers are counting on Android to provide a variety of code, such as power management code and other low-level features with potential long-term use.
"As a kernel developer, he wants to find the code he wants on the kernel," Garret said. "After we get the code, we have a new solution, and sometimes the code will give you new inspiration for other problems ."
Some Andrid kernel functions are finally presented as drivers, he added. That is exactly the type of code he wants to see integrated into the mainstream kernel.
"We want to get the Android drivers and add them to the Linux kernel," Garret said. "We do not want the Android driver to be different from the Linux driver ."
Garret said his final expectation is that Google Android only has a little more content than the mainstream Linux kernel. He hopes to see Google solve every problem and help Android develop the Linux kernel community.
"I don't know if I will personally see this ideal implementation," Garret said.
