Comparison of game benchmark test program values: Windows 7 vs Ubuntu Linux

At the beginning of this month, we released "windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux Benchmarks Comparison on workstation". In those tests (these tests were performed earlier this year, trying to explain whether windows 7 is faster than Ubuntu 10.04 and windows 7 is much faster than mac ox and Ubuntu Linux), the performance of the two systems is very similar, of course there will be a small "accident" in some ways ". Today, let's take a look at the performance of running Linux and windows on Lenovo Thinkpad W510. This time, we need to compare the performance of Ubuntu 10.04 long-term support edition and windows 7 Professional Edition on OpenGL games.

Lenovo Thinkpad W510 will be used to test the Intel core i7 720QM eight logic core processor (with four physical cores and hyperthread technology) with a clock speed of 1.60GHz and 4 GB DDR3 primary memory, hitachi HTS72503 320 GB 7200 rpm sata hard drive, 1600x900 resolution display, NVIDIA Quadro FX 880 M 1 GB graphics card ,. intel core i7 720QM is one of the fastest four-core notebook processors. It features a maximum frequency of 2.8 GHz and 6 MB intel intelligent high-speed cache. It supports SSE4.2 and 45nm process manufacturing. NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M graphics card, with 48 CUDA cores, core frequency 550 MHz, 128-bit 790MHz DDR3 memory, supports OpenGL 3.2 and OpenGL 1.0, NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M graphics processor is a consumer-grade GeForce GT 330 M mobile GPU.

The system tested on Lenovo ThinkPad W510 is Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Professional Edition and Ubuntu 10.04LTS 64-bit edition. On Windows side, the NVIDIA 258.96 WHQL driver is installed on the computer, and on Linux side, the latest NVIDIA 256.35 driver is installed on [Linux community www.linuxidc.com. the commonly used Ubuntu Lucid programs (including NVIDIA copyrighted drivers) are default installation versions, and all program settings are default options. The Phoronix test suite on windows and Linux platforms is used to measure the required benchmark test program value for OpenGL games in this article. We will run Nexuiz, OpenArena, Warsow, Lightsmark, unigine Sanctuary, Unigine Tropics, and Unigine Heaven.

When running Nexuiz, Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 are very similar in the resolution of 1024x768, both of which are just over 60 frames/second, when the resolution is increased to 1600x900 to increase the GPU load, it turns out that ThinkPad W510 has a better performance when running Windows 7 Professional Edition. although the NVIDIA proprietary drivers on the two platforms are similar, Windows 7 is 9% faster than Ubuntu Linux.

The ioquake3-based OpenArena is the game that requires the least GPU resources throughout the test. when OpenArena runs at a resolution of 1024x768, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is about 3% faster, but Windows and Ubuntu Linux both work at 300 frames per second. when the resolution is increased to 1600x900, the frame rate is still above 200 FPS, but the Windows 7 Professional Edition is 10% faster than the open-source system.

During the Lightsmark (a popular OpenGL lighting benchmark Testing Tool) test, Windows 7 Professional Edition is much faster than Ubuntu 10.04 LTS In both resolutions. in 1024x768 resolution, Windows 7 is 28% faster and 1600 faster in 900 x 41%.

When running the Unigine Sanctuary (one version with the smallest resource consumption in the unigine engine demo version) test, OpenGL windows and Linux have almost the same performance.

ThinkPad W510 laptop with Intel core i7 processor and NVIDIA Quadro graphics card has a great performance difference between windows and Ubuntu Linux when running the Unigine engine Tropics demo version ..

Finally, when the Lenovo computer runs the Unigine Heaven demo on windows and Linux platforms, there is no performance change.

The results of this OpenGL game test are similar to those we tested on workstation last month: In most cases, Microsoft windows 7 Professional Edition and Ubuntu long-term support edition have no significant performance differences. when the video card workload increases (such as when Lightsmark and Nexuiz are run), NVIDIA's graphics card driver in windows improves performance, but when running the unigine test with the largest workload, the performance of the two platforms is basically the same. Of course, these results are representative only when the differences between NVIDIA proprietary drivers on the two platforms are taken into account, when the driver is driven by ATI or by a computer installed with the Linux Mesa/Gallium3D driver, the results may be different.
