How do I deal with the conversion of PHP points?

User A has redeemed 1000 points by xxxxx number (the 1000 points are valid for 1 years)
January 2014
User A redeemed a gift with 800 points (200 points remaining)
January 2015
User A expires a year ago after the unused points
And my calculations are 200-1000= -800 .

How do you decide how much to use for some expired points??
