Article Title: How does Google use Linux ?. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.

In the past, Google's use of Linux has always been a mystery, as Google's so-called "commercial secrets ". The actual situation is that even Google is embarrassed to say it. Is this true?

On October 16, October 19-20, the Linux kernel development summit was held in Tokyo, Japan. during this event, Google's senior employee Mike Waychison disclosed some facts and was very interesting. In fact, Google's use of Linux is helpless (by perforce), because of the urgent needs of the task, it has to be done. Google started with Linux 2.4.18 and built its own core code tree, which was maintained by 30 people. According to Google's computing practice, more than 2,000 files are added and 492,000 lines of source code are added. After about a year and a half, we updated on the mainstream version, namely Linux 2.6.18,... Linux 2.6.26, and installed patch 1,208 and multi-line source code 0.3 million. Google's actual use of the Linux kernel is far behind mainstream international communities, so that there are some difficulties in external communication (technical language barriers ).

Mr. Linus Torvalds, the Linux kernel development leader, was at the scene and asked him, why didn't you submit the modified code? Is it a trade secret? Or what internal reasons? Mr. Waychison of Google said frankly not because of trade secrets, but because of the ugly code (Uugly. Mr. Waychison said that Google is currently trying to change this status to keep up with mainstream international communities.

On July 6, October 21-23, The first annual Linux conference was held in Tokyo. Linus Torvalds and Jim Zemlin, The Linux Foundation chairman, had a public conversation entitled "The impact of Linux" (about 37 minutes ), zemlin said that in the past year, 2,700,000 lines of source code were added to the Linux kernel, with an average of 10,923 lines of source code added each day. at the same time, 5,547 lines of source code were deleted every day. It can be seen that the development speed of Linux kernel is fast. In fact, the latest version of Linux 2.6.31 kernel has more than 10 million lines of source code. Ubuntu 9.10 is developed based on the latest Linux kernel. Obviously, Google's Chrome OS is not easy to surpass Ubuntu. Google launched its own operating system Chrome OS to deal with Microsoft. Google's Chrome OS is mainly designed to address its internal needs. In my opinion, developing the software industry in China does not need to care about Google's Chrome OS.

I am very angry that Google (China)'s cloud computing center machine room won't let me visit. What are some amazing secrets? I just want to build a cloud computing lab! Yesterday afternoon, using Ubuntu 9.10 to boot a USB flash drive faster than Windows 7 to boot a computer from the hard disk has become a reality. In the future, the Linux kernel-based small release version Tiny Core Linux 2.4.1 (10 MB, released in October 10, with the entire system resident memory) will be used to create a single function (applicable to surfing the Internet) the self-starting USB flash drive (capacity 1 GB) is limited to 30 RMB (except for express delivery fees ). See if anyone wants it?

Note 1: the so-called "surfing the Internet indiscriminately" refers to accessing dirty websites, where viruses and Trojans are often waiting for customers. I don't know why I want to visit these websites, but someone needs it. In addition, Sophos Security Lab recently detected that 80% of XP malicious code also liked to be attached to Windows 7. From this we can see that random web surfing dedicated USB flash drives are in the market demand.

Note 2: This afternoon, I will go to the National Convention Center to attend the Microsoft Technology Conference (Tech. ed 2009). try a "hands-on lab" because I don't know Win 7 very well.

Note 3: During a Linux seminar in Australia this year, Linus Torvalds said:

"I think multiple distributions aren't just a good thing, I think it's something absolutely required! We have hundreds of distros, and a lot of them are really for niche markets. and you need that-simply because different markets simply have different requirements, and no single distro will take care of them all."

This shows the necessity of the Linux minor release.
