PPT enthusiasts often ask me what they do with a few lines of text on their PPT presentation document. In this case, my answer is: the less the better, and not even! Generally speaking, the number of words presented on a slide is inversely proportional to the effect of your presentation (with the exception of course).
On Beyondbullets, Cliff Atkinson an article once raised such a sobering question: "As an audience, (in the course of listening to the PowerPoint presentation), do you find it more and more difficult or just the opposite?"
I am certainly an optimist, but I have to say sadly to you that there is no sign of improvement in the PowerPoint presentation, at least in Japan.
The traditional way of making PPT has lasted for a long time. The so-called traditional way, nothing more than monotonous, long, ugly, crowded words, sleepy pronoun. And this way, theoretically, has become part of culture, which is part of team culture. To put it simply, it is "the way to do things." In fact, it is hard and time-consuming to change culture easily. People often get used to the current way of doing things. For example, when writing an article, many people empty two spaces behind a period and are convinced that it is entirely true. However, unless you are using a courier font, the correct usage is to follow only one space.
In Japan, when new employees enter the company, they are required to train them to use the least amount of text in each slide when using a PowerPoint presentation. That sounds a really good initiative, doesn't it? However, this "minimum" is often a 7-8-line word and a perfect sentence! If a person dares to use only 1 to 2 words in a slide to be complete, that means the guy doesn't have a good job at all; and a series of text with the large color of the icon of the slide shows you are a serious employee, never worry about whether the audience will be bored, just look very complex.
I have a bookshelf in English and Japanese for the demo. All these books say "Use the fewest words", but most books define "least" as 6-8 lines of text. No one can make a good PowerPoint presentation on a page after page full of text slides, not Steve Jobs, Richard Branson! Text is used in the article, in the multimedia as long as the accidental use will be more effective.
