After installing VirtualBox in Ubuntu, if your virtual machine is installed on a Windows XP system, then you will find that when you plug in the USB stick, no matter how you toss, the virtual machine (XP) is not any response, neither prompted to find new hardware, also can not see the partition of the USB drive.
Unlike VMware, the default installation of the USB stick after the support is very good, there is no need for users to configure anything. From this point, I think VirtualBox is too dirty, small and beautiful to small and beautiful, but you can not put the most common features in the basic support list, but also to users to configure to use, right?

Here's how you can get VirtualBox virtual machine (XP) to find a USB flash drive and mount it. The host system is Ubuntu. To tell you the truth, many articles on the Internet are written so that people are very silent, or simply too exaggerated, or even Chinese are not fluent (negative points of responsibility line), I really can't see, so in the study out how to do, I decided to put such a simple thing to write a tutorial, to help people in need.

1. About Guest Additions
VirtualBox with a additions called guest, you can install the virtual machine in the VirtualBox menu (a click, the Software Installation screen will pop up in XP). The following steps are dependent on guest additions, I am not sure, so it is recommended that you install on.

Where is the support for 2.U disk?
You must have imagined that the default installation of the VirtualBox, unexpectedly there is no USB device support features! You have to go to its official website to download another "expansion pack" (Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack) for VirtualBox support! As mentioned earlier, I think this is very nasty.
Here (does not guarantee long-term validity, if invalid, please google). When I wrote this article, the version I downloaded was VirtualBox 4.3.8 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Packwith file name Oracle_vm_virtualbox_extension_ Pack-4.3.8-92456.vbox-extpack, double-click it to install (if you have already installed the VirtualBox software, it is useless to double-click it).
When you double-click, a dialog box similar to the following pops up:

Click "Install", no doubt.

3. Add a user group
Under Ubuntu command line, execute the following command:

sudo adduser your_user_name vboxusers

where Your_user_name is the Linux user name you use to run VirtualBox, you have to change it according to the actual situation.

4. Restart Host
Yes, reboot the host. Seemingly logout also line, but do not go to guess and try, restart host is certain effective.

5. Mount USB Drive
After restarting the host, plug in the USB flash drive, then start the virtual machine (XP), click on the virtual machine's VirtualBox menu: Device → assign USB device, find the name of your USB stick in the list of USB devices listed, click. The virtual machine (XP) should then be prompted to find new hardware.
If not, you may need to select "Enable USB2.0 (EHCI) controller" in the "USB device" setting in VirtualBox's global settings, and then restart the virtual machine to try again.
