There is a problem with the computer, but do not want to reload the system again and again, what can be done? Ghost's emergence has solved these thorny problems for us. Ghost is an abbreviation for general hardware oriented Software transfer, meaning "software delivery for generic hardware", a software for backup/recovery systems produced by Symantec. Ghost can restore the original backup system in just a few minutes, and the computer as it is. Ghost has become an indispensable software for PC users since it was published.

Now, Symantec Company has launched the latest version of Ghost: Ghost 2001 Chinese version. Let's go into ghost 2001.

  Software Installation

Unlike previous versions of Ghost: Ghost 2001 requires installation. The installation process is very simple, as with the general software, the installation directory is selected to install.

You must remember that the original ghost a floppy disk is more than sufficient, and Ghost 2001 installation file has more than 10 trillion. To the installed directory to view the only 7 trillion files found, which Ghost's documentation accounted for more than 4 trillion, Ghost's main program is still "short lean": 712kB. The rest is a few of the utilities that came with ghost, as described below.

  Use

Compared with previous versions, the Ghost 2001 interface is more user-friendly, but the operation is much more complicated. Just after the installation, I thought ghost 2001 changed to the standard interface of Windows. However, it was only after startup that it was an installation wizard--making the Ghost 2001 boot disk.

This installation wizard provides a wealth of options, including the production of standard boot disks that support LPT and USB, Peer-to-peer network startup disks, and CD-ROM startup disks. From here we can see that the Ghost 2001 supports a considerable number of storage and transport media. The Installation Wizard can also batch production of Ghost boot disk! The software, known as the "Clone King", can now be cloned indefinitely.

Usually we just need to make a standard boot disk, LPT and USB features are less likely to be used, the peer network boot disk is suitable for users on the LAN, and the CD-ROM boot disk is suitable for friends who are often installed.

After the launch disk is finished, the floppy disk guide system can directly enter the Ghost 2001. Of course, we can also enter Ghost 2001 without a boot disk, as long as you retire to MS-DOS or other DOS operating system, execute GhostPE.EXE. If the ghost parameters are not familiar, the author recommends the use of the startup disk.

  System backup

Using Ghost for system backups, there are both an entire hard drive (disk) and a partitioned hard disk (Partition). Click the local item in the menu, the menu that pops up on the right has 3 subkeys, in which disk indicates that the entire hard disk (that is, the clone) is backed up, the partition represents a single partition of the backup hard disk, and the check indicates that the hard disk or the backed-up file is checked for possible partition Backup or restore failed due to hard drive damage. Partitioned backups are useful for saving system data as individual users, especially when restoring and replicating system partitions.

Select the local→partition→to Image menu, eject the hard drive Selection window, and start the partition backup operation. Click the white hard disk information in the window, select the hard drive, enter the window, select the partition to operate (if there is no mouse, the keyboard can be used to operate: Tab key to switch, enter to confirm, the direction of the key to choose).

Select the backup stored directory path in the pop-up window and enter the backup file name, noting that the backup file name has the Gho suffix name.

Next, the program asks whether to compress the backup data, and gives 3 choices: no means no compression, fast indicates a small compression ratio and performs a faster backup, high is the compression ratio, but the execution of the backup speed is rather slow. The last option is to start a backup of the partitioned hard disk. The ghost Backup is very fast and can be done without waiting, and the backed-up files are stored in the set directory in the Gho suffix name.

  System clones

The clone of a hard disk is the backup and restore of the entire hard disk. Select the menu local→disk→to disk, select the source hard disk (the first hard drive) in the pop-up window, and then select the target hard disk (the second hard drive) to copy to. Note that you can set the size of each partition on the target hard disk, and ghost can automatically partition and format the target hard disk by the set partition value. Select Yes to begin execution.

Ghost can replicate the target hard drive almost exactly like the source hard disk, and implement partitioning, formatting, copying systems, and files in one step. Just be aware that the target hard disk cannot be too small and must be able to load the data contents of the source hard disk.

Ghost also provides a hard disk backup feature that backs up data from the entire hard disk into a single file on your hard disk (menu local→disk→to Image) and can be restored to other hard drives or to the source hard disk at any time, which is handy for installing multiple systems. The use method is similar to a partitioned backup.

  System Restore

If the partition data that is backed up on your hard disk is corrupted, cannot be repaired with the general data repair method, and the system fails to boot after it is compromised, you can use the backed-up data for a full recovery without reinstalling the program or system. Of course, you can also restore the backup to another hard disk.

To restore the backup partition, select the menu Local→partition→from Image in the interface, select the restored backup file in the pop-up window, select the restored hard disk and partition, and click the Yes button.

  Software features

  Storage media

Ghost 2001 supports storage media beyond our imagination, which supports peer-to-peer LPT interfaces, Peer-to-peer USB interfaces, peer-to-peer TCP/IP interfaces, SCSI tape drives, portable devices (JAZ, ZIP, MO, etc.), CD burners (CDR, CDRW), and more. These features do not require any drivers and software to take out, just a floppy disk can do! In particular, the support of the CD burner, today's burner and blank discs are very cheap, very suitable for backup purposes.

  Compatibility

Ghost 2001 has good support for existing operating systems, including FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, HPFS, UNIX, Novell, and other file storage formats. Unlike previous versions, Ghost 2001 added support for Linux EX2 (FIFO file storage format), which means that Linux users can also use Ghost to back up the system.

  Supporting software support

Ghost Browser: In previous ghost versions, we were able to simply back up, copy, restore the system, restore individual files and folders, and use the Ghostexp software. Now, the Symantec Company has integrated ghost browsers into the software. The Ghost Browser uses a resource manager-like interface that allows us to quickly and easily locate and restore the files and folders we want in our backup package.

Gdisk:gdisk is a newly added utility that completely replaces FDISK and format:

* Quick Format

* Ability to hide and display partitions. This feature allows more than one primary DOS partition, and the operating system on each partition has a different version. The ability to hide partitions makes the computer accustomed to booting to the selected bootable partition, ignoring the installation of the same operating system in other hidden partitions.

* Comprehensive zoning reports.

* Highly secure disk erasure. Provides disk erasure options that meet the U.S. Department of Defense Standards and higher security standards.

Unlike Fdisk, which uses an interactive menu, Gdisk is driven by the command line. This provides faster configuration of disk partitions and the ability to define Gdisk operations in batch files. But at the same time, dozens of parameters will make ordinary users headache, so I do not recommend the general user, Symantec company should also introduce the corresponding GUI (graphical user interface) console to facilitate user use. Specific parameter descriptions can be gdisk/with the command line.

Live Update

Live update is a generic upgrade to the Symantec company software that checks for installed Symantec software in the current system and upgrades the software online via the Internet.

When you install Ghost 2001, Setup automatically upgrades the version of the Live update program.

Additional Command-Line arguments: (no ghost/restore/Replication Limited)

In fact, Ghost 2001 features far more than the ones shown in its main program, Ghost can add a number of parameters to the command line it starts to achieve more functionality. Command-Line arguments are quite complex to use, but we can make batch files that are "once and for All" (similar to Unattended Windows 98 and Windows 2000) Now let's take a look at some of the commonly used parameters (see the Ghost Help file for a more detailed description of the parameters).

1.-rb

The ghost automatically restarts when the operation ends. In this way, you can safely leave the system when you copy it.

2.-fx

The ghost action automatically returns to the DOS prompt when the exit is completed.

3.-sure

Answer "Yes" to all prompts or warnings that require confirmation. This parameter has a certain risk and is recommended only for advanced users.

4.-fro

If the source partition finds a bad cluster, it skips the prompt to force the copy. This parameter can be used to try to save data in the hard drive bad track.

5. @filename

Specifies the TXT file in filename. TXT file is an additional parameter for ghost, which is not limited by the DOS command line 150 characters.

6.-f32

Converts the source FAT16 partition copy to FAT32 (provided the target partition is not less than 2G). WinNT 4 and WINDOWS95, 97 users use caution.

7.-bootcd

This option makes the disc bootable when you back up files directly to the disc. This process needs to be put into the boot disk.

8.-fatlimit

Limit the NT FAT16 partition to 2G. This parameter is useful when replicating Windows NT partitions and does not want to use the FAT16 of the 64k/cluster.

9.-span

The volume parameters. Another backup package that prompts for replication to another partition when there is insufficient space.

10.-auto

A file name is automatically assigned to continue execution when the volume copy is not prompted.

11.-crcignore

The CRC ERROR in the backup package is ignored. Do not use this parameter to prevent data errors unless you need to salvage the data in the backup package.

12.-ia

All images. Ghost backs up all the partitions on the hard disk.

13.-ial

All images, similar to the-ia parameters, backup the Linux partitions one by one.

14.-id

All images. Similar to the-ia parameter, but contains the boot information for the partition.

15.-quiet

Status updates and user intervention are prohibited during the operation.

16.-script

You can execute multiple ghost command lines. The command line is stored in the specified file.

17.-span

Enables the cross volume feature of the image file.

18.-split=x

Divides the backup package into multiple volumes, each with an X-megabyte size. This feature is very useful for large backup packages to be replicated to mobile storage devices, such as copying a 1.9G backup package onto 3 burn discs.

19.-z

Compresses the contents of a disk or partition when it is saved to an image file. The z-or-Z1 is a low compression rate (fast),-Z2 is a high compression rate (medium speed), and-z3 to-z9 the compression rate increases sequentially (the speed slows down).

20.-clone

This is the core parameter for implementing Ghost Unmanned backup/recovery. Use syntax for:

-clone,mode= (operation), src= (source), dst= (destination), [SZE (size), SZE (size) ...]

This parameter row is more complex and cannot contain spaces between the parameters. Where operation means the operation type, the value is preferable: Copy: disk to disk; Load: files to disk; Dump: disk to file; Pcopy: partition to partition; Pload: file to partition; Pdump: Partition to file.

Source means the operation, the value is preferable: drive letter, starting from 1, or file name, you need to write an absolute path.

Destination meaning is the target location, the value is preferable: drive letter, starting from 1, or file name, need to write absolute path; @CDx, Burner, x represents the drive letter of the burner, starting from 1.

  The following examples illustrate

Command line arguments: ghostpe.exe-clone,mode=copy,src=1,dst=2

Completing the Operation: Copy Local Disk 1 to local Disk 2.

Command line arguments: ghostpe.exe-clone,mode=pcopy,src=1:2,dst=2:1

Completing the operation: Copy the second partition on local Disk 1 to the first partition on the local Disk 2.

Command-line arguments: ghostpe.exe-clone,mode=load,src=g:3prtdisk.gho,dst=1,sze1=450m,sze2=1599m,sze3=2047 M

Completing the operation: Mount Disk 1 from the image file, resize the first partition to 450MB, the second to 1599MB, and the third to 2047MB.

Command line arguments: Ghostpe.exe-clone,mode=pdump,src2:1:4:6,dst=d:prt246.gho

Completing the operation: Creates an image file with only the selected partition. Select partitions 1, 4, 6 from disk 2.

With these parameters in place, we can easily implement the ghost Backup/Replication/recovery. Let's have a cup of coffee.

  Attention matters

1. A single backup file is best not to exceed 2GB when backing up the system.

2. Before backing up the system, it is a good idea to remove some unwanted files to reduce the volume of ghost files. Usually useless files are: Windows temporary folder, ie temporary folder, Windows memory Exchange file. These files usually take up more than 100 megabytes of hard disk space.

3. Before backing up the system, organize the target disk and source disk to speed up the backup.

4. Before backing up the system and before restoring the system, it is a good idea to check the target disk and source disk to correct the disk errors.

5. In the recovery system, it is best to check the target disk to restore whether there are important documents have not been transferred, do not wait for hard disk information is covered after the regret AH.

6. When choosing the compression rate, we recommend that you do not choose the highest compression rate, because the highest compression rate is time-consuming, and the compression rate is not significantly improved.

7. After the newly installed software and hardware, it is best to recreate the image file, otherwise it is likely to have some inexplicable errors after the recovery.

  Summarize

As the saying goes, "Maito", who can ensure that their computers do not have any problems? Of course, we can find faults through various methods after the problem, using all kinds of "Dafa" to make the system return to normal, but the time and effort will be dozens of times times the above method, sometimes not necessarily work. Ghost 2001 is a rare personal computer backup/Restore tool, its "short stature" provides us with rich, convenient functions. From the update status of the ghost versions, Ghost is constantly expanding its capabilities, expanding its adaptive environment (various operating systems and file storage formats) and developing it in the direction of disk consultants (including partitioning, multiple booting, security formatting, fixing errors, and so on). What will happen to the ghost of the future? Let's wait and see.
