Install XFree86 under FreeBSD

FreeBSD XFREE86 as the basic component of the operating system, and you can choose to install the system when you install it. The XFREE86 system will be installed when the components are selected when the system is installed, depending on the selection of different components, such as selecting X-user or X-developer options. The user is also prompted to set XFREE86 immediately when the system is installed, but since the initial operation of FreeBSD is not related to the graphical interface, this setup work can be performed at any time after the system is installed, rather than at the initial installation.

If XFREE86 is not installed at the initial installation, it can be installed after the installation of the entire installation system is complete. You can either manually install the binary components from the installation media, or XFREE86 and install the latest version of XFree86 from either the home page (http://www.xfree86.org) or the FreeBSD site. The XFREE86 installation files are placed in the/xf86333 directory of the installation media root, and only the related files need to be unpacked to the/USR/X11R6 directory at the time of installation. You can use the Sysinstall or the INSTALL.SH program in this directory to help with the installation.

In earlier versions of XFREE86, its setting was a very difficult issue. Because of the variety of display cards, and each card has a wide range of parameters, to correctly set the XFREE86, you must have a deeper understanding of these hardware. The first time you need to manually change the configuration file, XFree86 provides an interactive command-line configuration Xf86config to help users configure X Window. But this program simply prompts the user to enter the relevant information, and once an option is determined, it cannot be traced back to the correction. Therefore, if it is the first time to use Xf86config to configure XFREE86, there will be no doubt encountered a variety of problems.

Fortunately, in later XFree86, XFree86 's developers provided another configuration program: Xf86setup, which first started the 16-color standard VGA mode x Window, and then executed the graphical interface Setup program, The graphical interface provides a much easier way to set up a XFREE86 server.

When you use the Sysinstall program to set x Window (select Xfree86 in the Configure menu), it prompts the user to choose between the Xf86setup and Xf86config settings. Note that the PC98 in this option refers to a particular type of computer hardware produced in Japan, rather than the motherboard PC98 specification in standard hardware, so users of a standard PC do not need to use this setting option.

If you do not use Sysinstall to start the Setup program, you can also manually enter (must be root) the appropriate command on the command line:

#/usr/x11r6/bin/xf86setup

Or

#/usr/x11r6/bin/xf86config

Use a different command to start the appropriate Setup program.
