Many Linux versions, such as SUSE 10 and Xandros 3, support Centrino by using the ipw2xxx driver and the Linux hot swapping feature. In this way, you can use a Linux-compatible interface to convert the Centrino card and micro-adapter hardware.

Integrating this support into the kernel makes it easy for Linux to support Centrino-based Wi-Fi. However, due to Intel's license restrictions, the vendor must also obtain the Intel driver hardware in the kernel.

The new kernel not only has minor improvements in support for InfiniBand, USB and SCSI, but also has significant improvements in support for file systems.

These improvements include the upgrade of the 64-bit XFS of Silicon Graphics and the NTFS (New Technology File System) of Microsoft. These improvements are made for Linux VFS (Virtual File System.

With this version of kernel, FUSE (File system in Userspace) is also integrated into Linux.

FUSE, like the outdated LUFS, provides such an abstract interface that allows remote files and file systems to operate like local file systems. Therefore, for example, developers and expert users can build their own systems so that users can access ftp and SMB (Simple Message Block) file systems as easily as they access local file systems.

More advanced users may be interested in exploring more advanced features of FUSE. In Linux, almost everything can be treated as a file, so you can also use Google's GMail and Bit Torrent streams as files for FUSE access.

Some people want to integrate the Reiser4 High-Performance File System into the kernel, but give up considering its consistency with VFS and other parts of Linux. All these issues are under consideration. In the near future, Reiser4 should officially become part of Linux.

At the same time, before setting the features of the next release version 2.6.15, Torvalds intends to only accept the code fusion within two weeks after the release of version 2.6.14. The introduction of this new policy can ensure continuous performance improvement from enthusiastic core kernel developers.
