Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 is a solution for data and System Backup and Recovery. It provides bare metal Recovery to automatically back up the entire System, a single file, and a folder, allows quick recovery of the same or different hardware, virtual machines, or remote sites.

BESR 2010 has added support for Windows 7, Microsoft Exchange 2010, and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2. It will also support the Linux operating system for the first time, starting with Red Hat and Novell SUSE. The Linux version will be available starting from next month.

The new version also uses Symantec's Granular reular Option. Previously, this feature was optional, allowing small businesses to back up the entire file server, desktop, laptop, virtual server, or key application server, for example, Microsoft Exchange or SharePoint, and then quickly restore "granular" projects such as a single Exchange email, SharePoint file, or a single file.

Backup copies can be saved to different types of disk storage devices and copied to an offline site or secondary disk for disaster recovery.

Backup Exec System Recovery also adds support for virtual environments, these include VMware vSphere 4.0, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008, and Citrix XenServer 5.x, which enables small businesses to convert physical systems to virtual machines for disaster recovery or testing.

The free Backup Exec System Recovery Management Solution allows you to centrally manage Backup and Recovery tasks for multiple servers within an enterprise.

BESR is divided into several versions: server, desktop, and virtual machine. it supports 11 Chinese languages, but Linux only supports one English language.

Susie Spencer, senior marketing manager of Exec System Recovery, said BESR allows users to "look at the entire environment so they can see what is protected and what needs to be backed up ."

Symantec plans to release other new products early next year, including maid, Backup Exec 2010, and Enterprise Vault Exchange 2010.
