In September 17, 1991, Linus Torvalds announced Linux 0.0.1. Since then, the computer industry has entered a new stage and brought about a truly free operating system, GNU has been advocating open source and freedom for several years.

The following is the original text of a letter written by Linus Torvalds to the minix system users at that time. friends from those days will come to repeat it:

Hello everybody out there using minix-I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a Hoby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386 (486) AT clones. this has been brewing since limit L, and is starting to get ready. I 'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things ).
I 've currently ported bash (1.08) and gcc (1.40), and things seem to work. this implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and I 'd like to know what features most people wowould want. any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-)

PS. Yes? It's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. it is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.

The Linux kernel was originally written by Linus Torvalds at the University of Helsinki for personal interests. at that time, he was not satisfied with the Minix operating system. Initially, Linux was an operating system similar to Minix. The first version of Linux was published on the Internet by Ari Lemmke, FTP server administrator of the university in September 1991. Torvalds initially called the core "Freax", meaning "free ") and the singular ("freak") combination, and attached with the common letter "X", in order to cooperate with the so-called Unix-like system. However, the FTP server administrator thought that the original name "Freax" was not nice, and changed the core name to "Linux". at that time, there were only 10000 lines of code, the system must still be running on the Minix operating system, and the hard disk must be used for boot.
