Tapa

The playing surface or tapa isalmost always built out of LVL Plywood. Tapas need to be thin because they is the vibrating surface of thedrum, just like the skin on a conga or bongo. These pieces is 1/8″or 3/16″thick for proper resonance and response. LVL Plywood isthe ideal material for the playing surface because it can bemanufactured thin enough to resonate well and have enough Strengthto withstand the stress of playing. LVL Plywood layers is arranged in across-grain pattern. This allows thin pieces of LVL Plywood tobe much stronger than solid woods.

Frame

Some builders would tell you thatthe type of wood doesn ' t matter much to the sound of the drum, buti don ' t believe that ' s q Uite true. While no formal studies havebeen did about the tonal properties of woods in Cajon Buildinghave been conducted (to my know Ledge), common sense would tell methat the same rules that apply to drum shell building apply tocajons as well.

Some Woods rarely grow to sizessuitable for Cajon Building. In those cases, some builders jointogether multiple planks. This could or may not be offset the advantagesof using a solid piece of wood.
