Red Hat announced last Thursday that it would pay $0.107 billion in cash to buy Qumranet, an Israeli-based virtual technology provider, to strengthen its support for Enterprise Virtualization platforms.

Qumranet products include the Kernel Virtual Machine (KVM) platform and SolidICE. The former is an open source code developed by Qumranet and embedded in the Linux core. The latter is a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI ), redHat intends to use Qumranet technology to provide comprehensive virtualization technology and management solutions on servers to the desktop, as well as on Linux and Windows platforms.

According to RedHat, this will enable the company to achieve what other virtualization companies cannot achieve, comprehensively integrate virtualization technology with the operating system, reduce IT costs and strengthen the elasticity and response of the IT architecture.

Red Hat previously used Xen as a virtualization solution, but announced in June this year that it would switch to KVM. Outside speculation is also one of the main reasons why Red Hat bought Qumranet. One feature of KVM is that the CPU of the system to be executed must support virtualization, while AMD and Intel's latest chips also support virtualization.

SolidICE is a solution designed for virtualized desktops. It enables users' Windows or Linux desktops to run on virtual machines hosted by central servers. Michael Rose, an IDC analyst, believes the merger made RedHat a competitor in the virtual desktop market.

Red Hat chief executive Jim whiteurst said the merger allowed the Red Hat to expand the distance between open source code and private architecture software. KVM and VDI technology will be the pioneer of the next generation of virtual technology, it will meet the market demand for virtualization solutions.

Red Hat did not reveal when the merger was completed, but said that Qumranet employees will join the Red Hat and will maintain the KVM opening.
