One of the best ways to improve your computer's performance is to optimize your hard drive. The features included in Windows help you optimize the various types of drives that your computer uses today. No matter what type of drive your computer is using, Windows automatically chooses the optimal way to fit the drive.

By default, the optimize drive (formerly known as Disk Defragmenter) runs automatically on a weekly basis. But you can also manually optimize your computer's drive.

To manually optimize a drive

1. Open the optimize drive in the following ways: Swipe from the right edge of the screen, click "Search" (if you use the mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, then move the pointer down, click Search), type the defragmentation in the search box, and then click or click Settings and Defragment and optimize your drive.

2. Under Status, click or click the drive you want to optimize. (The Media Type column displays the drive type that is optimized.) )

3. To determine if the drive needs to be optimized, click or click Analyze. The system may require you to provide an administrator password or confirm your choice.

When Windows finishes analyzing the drive, check the current status column to see if the drive needs to be optimized. If the drive has a fragmentation ratio of more than 10%, the drive should be optimized immediately.

4. Click or click "Optimize". The system may require you to provide an administrator password or confirm your choice.

Drive optimizations may take place at any location, from minutes to hours, depending on the size of the drive and the degree of optimization required. The computer can still be used during the optimization process.

Attention:

If the drive is being used by another program, or is formatted with a file system other than NTFS, FAT, or FAT32, the drive cannot be optimized.

The network drive cannot be optimized.

If the drive does not appear in the optimize drive, it may be because the drive contains an error. Try repairing the drive first, and then return to the optimize drive to try again. For more information, see "Steps to repair a drive" at the end of this article.

To change the optimization plan

2. Click or click "Change Settings". The system may require you to provide an administrator password or confirm your choice.

3. Perform one of the following actions:

To turn off scheduled optimizations, clear the Run as scheduled check box. 800 million net ms8e.com

To change the frequency of scheduled optimizations, click or click the Drop-down list next to frequency, and then click or click Daily, Weekly, or monthly. The default optimization plan is to run weekly during automatic maintenance.

To select a drive to include in the plan optimization or exclude from plan optimization, click or click Select on the drive, select or clear the check box next to the drive, and then click or click OK. If you do not want the new drive to be added to the scheduled optimization, you can also clear the Automatically optimize new drive check box. If Windows cannot optimize a drive, it does not use this drive as an option for automatic maintenance.

4. Click or click OK.
