Exchange 2010 stress testing can use two tools, both from Microsoft, Exchange Server Jetstress 2010 and Exchange Server Load Generator 2010. Both of them can be used for performance and scalability evaluation of Exchange 2010. It should be noted that the two software should be evaluated in the test environment rather than in the production environment.

Exchange Server Jetstress 2010

The Jetstress tool is designed to simulate Exchange I/O at the database level through direct interaction with database technologies of the Scalable storage engine (ESE), also known as the foundation for building Jet and Exchange. Jetstress can be configured to test the required performance constraints of Exchange, which can be used for the maximum I/O throughput of the disk subsystem. It can also accept the number of users and the I/O configuration file per user per second, verify that the disk subsystem can use this configuration file to maintain an acceptable performance level. Before deploying an Exchange server, you can use Jetstress to test the storage reliability and performance. If you are concerned about the performance of the storage subsystem or need to determine the system I/O capacity, you should run Jetstress.

Exchange Server Load Generator 2010

The Load Generator (LoadGen) tool is designed to generate simulated client workloads based on the Exchange test deployment. This workload can be used to evaluate Exchange execution and analyze the impact of various configuration changes on Exchange behavior and performance under system load. The LoadGen documentation describes how to configure and perform load tests on the Exchange Server. LoadGen can simulate Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 online and cache), Outlook 2007 online and cache), POP3, IMAP4, SMTP, ActiveSync, and Outlook Web App client activity. It can be used to generate single-Protocol workloads, or combine these client protocols in some form to generate multi-protocol workloads.

Exchange Server 2010 stress testing tool description:

Jetstress and LoadGen are usually used as part of the pre-deployment process and can be used to provide data for the hardware resizing requirements before purchasing the hardware, it can also be used to analyze the stability and performance of the system before placing the system in the production environment.

Jetstress test: if possible, run the Jetstress test before placing the mailbox server in the production environment. The Jetstress test is very simple. In addition to the required hardware settings and operating system configurations that have been completed before you install Exchange, you can easily complete the test without any additional work.

LoadGen testing: the LoadGen testing involves a lot of content and should be carefully considered and carefully planned. Set an actual goal to get some information from the test results, and always remember that LoadGen cannot provide 100% accurate simulation for all client activities. Therefore, any measurement generated by the Loadgen test should be used as a reference for the decision-making process, rather than as the only data point that ultimately determines the server size adjustment or configuration change.
