RedHat releases OpenShift, a new version of private PaaS

Last year, the company launched the initial version of OpenShift-an application development tool running on the cloud, marking the company's entry into the PaaS market. After 18 months of testing, Red Hat officially launched OpenShift. Red Hat says, unlike products from large PaaS vendors (such as Vmware's Cloud Foundry and Microsoft Azure, openShift is optimized to run in the private cloud and third-party data centers behind the customer's own firewall at the same time.

Red Hat's JBoss Enterprise application platform already has a powerful application development platform, but Ashesh Badani, General Manager of the cloud business department of Red Hat, said that the difference between Openshift and Openshift is, it can run in the cloud. The software automatically allows users to configure resources based on application requirements, without having to configure servers in advance like a traditional application platform, which may lead to waste. OpenShift is also software that is familiar with several languages, meaning developers can use some languages to write applications, including Java, Ruby, Python, PHP, and Perl. Because the application development platform is abstracted from the underlying hardware, it means that Openshift can run on the customer's private cloud or the supplier's public cloud at the same time. In the end, Badani said that PaaS brought easier management for Operation Managers and more freedom for developers.

Badani said that OpenShift has features unique to Red Hat, such as the security enhancement Linux (SELinux), which is jointly developed by Red Hat and the US National Security Agency to provide access control, and allow information differentiation in the system. Openshift runs in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Badani said that Red Hat wants to integrate OpenShift into the company's OpenStack branch. OpenStack is still in the testing stage, but is expected to be officially launched next year. The price of OpenShift depends on the usage, that is, the number of nodes or instances it runs on. The price of the two cores is USD 5550.

Red Hat will present OpenShift on Amazon Web Services re: Invent in Las Vegas this week, and many other PaaS vendors may also have new products, including CloudBees's enhanced support for its Java-Paas to run on AWS's virtual private cloud today.

John Treadway, consultant at Cloud Technology Partners, said Red Hat has a huge market opportunity, but OpenShift's beta version has hardly appeared in the market, this means that Red Hat has no traction in the market. Vmware's Cloud Foundry platform is far ahead of Red Hat's OpenShift. Is this good for Red Hat? Treadway said: "In this market, it is too early to select winners and losers ."

Gartner recently reported that it expects the PaaS market to grow from 0.9 billion US dollars last year to 1.2 billion US dollars this year, while the software as a service (SaaS) market is 14 billion US dollars, however, the PaaS market is expected to grow to $2016 by 2.9 billion.

In addition to Cloud Foundry and OpenShift, there are also Microsoft Azure, Apprenda, ActiveState, Cloud Bees and many other vendors. Treadway is very optimistic about PaaS technology, especially the automation technology it provides for developers, which can lead to faster application development and reduce code errors. The earliest PaaS deployers mainly included companies that attempted to transform their software into an independent cloud-based software-as-a-service vendor and wanted to further automate their application development and delivery platforms.
