MiTAC GFX, an ARM server jointly developed by Shanda and ARM, Marvell, and Canonical (Ubuntu Developer), debuted at the Taipei Computer show. It has 8 ASX computing modules with 256 cores, the power consumption is less than 900 watts.

The ASX computing module in MiTAC GFX mainly uses the four-core SoC processor aramda xp designed by the ARM Cortex A9 architecture. The processor power consumption is about 6 Watts, which can greatly reduce the power consumption of the processor.

This server is mainly used with the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS operating system. In terms of hardware, it can accommodate eight half-u asx computing modules at a 4U height, each computing module uses 8 Marvell 4-core SoC processing chip Amada XP and provides 4 hard disk slots and 8 memory slots. Each memory supports a maximum of 32 GB memory.

According to Shenda, because MiTAC GFX uses a power-saving ARM architecture processor, each ASX module consumes less than 95 watts of power, and the total power consumption of eight ASX modules is about 855 watts, if the total power consumption of cabinets at a height of 42U is about 4 KW, the biggest advantage of the ARM system is power saving compared with the x86 server cabinet, which reaches 15 to 20 KW, given the power supply limit of a single cabinet in the data center, the ARM architecture system can realize the high-density system required by cloud computing.

MiTAC GFX applications lock network access, Web browsing, email servers, and other applications, but the current price is not yet determined. To successfully enter the server market, Shanda is negotiating with Marvell, we hope to launch the market at a lower price and start mass production in the fourth quarter of this year.

Shanda MiTAC GFXGFX can be built into a maximum of eight half-u asx computing modules

Each module has eight Mavell four-core SoC processing chips, four hard disk slots, and eight memory slots. The module consumes less than 95 watts of power.
