If you want to learn and prepare for RHCE, if you do not have a network environment, you can use VMware to build a virtual network on a single machine and perform various Linux network tests, of course, the prerequisite is that the machine performance must be good (at least MB of memory ).
This document describes how to install VMware Workstation 4.0.5 (Build 1.0) using Red Hat's latest desktop version Fedora Core 6030 ).
Overview
The Fedora Project is an open source community program funded by Red Hat. we can regard Fedora Core 1.0 as a later version of Red Hat Linux 9.0. Red Hat's Fedora Project is a bit similar to Sun's OpenOffice project, using two methods:
The open-source Fedora Project attracts a large number of programmers and returns the source code to the community free of charge to comply with the GPL license. at the same time, it is optimized based on the Fedora Project, sell commercial operating system products for enterprises or individuals.
VMware Workstation Linux has two release methods: one is the RPM installation package and the other is the tar installation package. Here we select the tar installation package, you can download to the VMware website http://www.vmware.com, the income of tar.gzinstallation package file name is vmware-workstation-4.05-6030-tar.gz. Please note that you must register before downloading to get a 30-day free trial temporary license. the official version costs $299.
The installation process can be divided into the following three steps:
(1) decompress the tar installation package to obtain a vmware-distrib folder.
(2) in text mode (or desktop environment to open the terminal command window), then run the vmware-install.pl installation script at the command prompt to start the installation process. In this process, you need to answer some questions raised by the installation program.
(3) after the installation is complete, you must also run the vmware-config.pl configuration script to configure the network components of VMware Workstation, this phase is the key part of the entire installation process.
Decompress the tar installation package
First, you must log on to Fedora Core 1.0 as the root user, as shown in 1. You can also run "su-" in other user environments to switch to the root user environment.
First, decompress the tar.gz installation package in a graphical manner. Simple: go to the Directory of the tar.gzinstallation package, click the icon of the tar.gz package with the right mouse button, and click "decompress here" in the pop-up menu, as shown in figure 2.
The "decompress" dialog box is displayed. in the "decompress to" box on it, locate the/tmp directory and click "OK" to start the decompression process.
Install VMware
The decompress result is to add a vmware-distrib folder in the/tmp Directory. now you can start the installation. Choose "main menu"> "system tools"> "terminal" to open the terminal command window (similar to the doscommand prompt window in Windows XP ). Then, enter the following commands and press enter:
[Root @ peter root] # cd/tmp
[Root @ peter tmp] # cd vmware-distrib
[Root @ peter vmware-distrib] #./vmware-install.pl
The command above indicates to switch to the/tmp directory and the decompressed vmware-distrib directory and run the vmware-install.pl script under that directory.
Next, start installation. the installer will ask some questions and provide the default answers. press enter to accept these default answers, as shown in 3.
