TCP/IP Settings and precautions (1)

Different TCP/IP layers provide different security. For example, a virtual private network is provided at the network layer and a secure connection service is provided at the transmission layer. The following describes the security of TCP/IP at different levels and the methods to improve the security of each layer.

Big anatomy of TCP/IP name

Name resolution provides users with easy-to-remember server names, so that users do not need to remember the Digital IP addresses used to identify the server on the TCP/IP network. The name resolution service includes DNS and WINS.

Domain Name System (DNS)

DNS is a hierarchical naming system used to locate computers on the Internet and dedicated TCP/IP networks. You usually need to install one or more DNS servers. Internet email, Web browsing, and Active Directory all require DNS. Some domains with Windows 2000 clients also require DNS. When a domain controller is created or a server is promoted to a domain controller, DNS is automatically installed, except when Windows 2000 detects that a DNS server exists in the domain. Alternatively, you can explicitly use DNS as the component to be installed during or after installation .)

If you install DNS on the server, you need to specify a static IP address for the server. In addition, you also need to configure DNS clients so that they can recognize this IP address. For information about allocating static IP addresses, see specify static local IP addresses and settings required for DNS and WINS. For information about configuring DNS, see DNS.

Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)

If you want to support running Windows NT or any early Microsoft operating system client, you need to install Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) on one or more servers in the domain ). WINS is an optional software component that appears under the network service in the component list. For information about how to install the WINS component, see select the component to install .) If you install WINS on the server, you must specify a static IP address for the server. In addition, you need to configure the WINS client so that they can identify this IP address.

For information about allocating static IP addresses, see specify static local IP addresses and settings required for DNS and WINS. For information on configuring WINS, see WINS.

How DNS queries work

When the DNS client needs to query the name used in the program, it will query the DNS server to resolve the name. Each query message sent by the client includes three items to specify the server's answer:
