Controlling the automatic numbering or multilevel lists of Word can be a big headache for many people. Today we say, how to correctly control the automatic numbering/multilevel list function.

We are here to say "hardest" multi-level list, mastered the multi-level list, automatic numbering is much simpler.

First, click the Multilevel list button in Word

, and select "Define a new multilevel list ...".

Then, in the pop-up dialog, we set the number-specific style for each level, for example, we use the style "1,2,3" in the Arabic numeral, and then in the "Enter Number format" field for the style of parentheses, in the right column we can see the preview.

Now, we can click on the OK button to apply a custom multilevel list that fits your liking. After we've identified it, we can see that word has inserted the first first-level header number-"one," for us.

Next, we just need to work with the shortcut key to enter the title of each level. Create the next title at the same level with a carriage return, you want to switch to the next level of heading level, simply press the TAB key after the carriage return; To create the next heading, press and hold the Shift+tab key combination.

To move a heading up to the top of the heading, position the cursor over the title, and then use the key combination alt+shift+↑; Similarly, to move the current heading downward, simply press the key combination alt+shift+↓.

If you want to enter some specific content below the title, and the content is not numbered, then you need to pause the AutoNumber. Quite simply, instead of going directly to the carriage, you use the Shift+enter key combination to create a manual newline that pauses the number, and it also has the function of a carriage return--switch to the next line. Of course, if and you do not want to use manual line breaks, feel that its resulting indentation does not meet your requirements, then you can also directly click the currently in the selected status of the number icon

, this way you can cancel its pressed state, and the automatic numbering will stop. Then, at some point in the next, you want to continue to automatically numbering? Also simple, just click the Multilevel list button again and select a list style under current list, where Word starts the new list number from "one,". If you need to continue with the previous number, you can select this "one," and then right-click it and choose "Continue numbering". That way, your list is connected to the previous list.
