The development of a WAN port Broadband Router has become a bottleneck in Load Balancing

With the development of China's routing industry, WAN port broadband routers are also widely used. Here we mainly introduce the role of Server Load balancer in the Development of WAN port broadband routers, the technical differences between the multi-WAN port broadband routers are not very large. The load balancing capability is the main feature of a single WAN port Broadband Router, and it is also an important indicator to evaluate the performance of the Multi-WAN port Broadband Router. The implementation of Server Load balancer varies according to different policies.

Different from a single WAN port Broadband Router, due to the existence of multiple WAN ports, how to allocate the data traffic of each WAN port has become a problem that must be solved by the multi-WAN port Broadband Router. Various Load Balancing policies have also emerged. Different Server Load balancer policies have different processing methods. Even if the same vro configuration is used and different Server Load balancer policies are used, the performance of the entire server will be completely different during work. Taking two WAN-port broadband routers as an example, the common load balancing policies can be roughly divided into the following types.

First, the two WAN networks are working, but the traffic balance is allocated in a fixed proportion. For example, each of them accounts for 50%, which means data transmission is performed based on 50% of the total traffic. In this case, if the inbound traffic of two WAN ports is significantly different, an imbalance may occur. One WAN port may be congested, while the other WAN port may have a surplus. For example, if the inbound traffic of one WAN port is 2 M, and the inbound traffic of the other WAN port is 10 M, data transmission is performed for each WAN (2 + 10)/2 = 6 M, the WAN port of the 2 m inlet line is congested, while the WAN port of the 10 m inlet line is still surplus, which is obviously not a reasonable method.

Second, the two WANs are working, but the traffic balance can be set manually.

Third, Configure Automatic Load Balancing Based on the bandwidth ratio. In addition, when one inbound line is 2 M and the other is 10 M, the two WAN ports will automatically allocate traffic at a ratio of 2 to 10, that is, the WAN port of the 2 m line takes 2/12 Of the total traffic, while the WAN port of the 10 m line takes 10/12 Of the total traffic, ensuring that each WAN port is fully and reasonably utilized. In addition, when a line fails, all data is automatically routed from the other line. Obviously, this load balancing policy is optimal.

In fact, some multi-WAN port broadband routers do not have load balancing policies. Normally, only one WAN port is used for data transmission, and the other WAN port is used for backup, when the working WAN port fails, it will be automatically started. In this case, the second WAN port can only be used for backup, and increasing the egress bandwidth will become empty talk, in addition, Server Load balancer cannot be used. "The best effect of multiple WAN ports can be achieved only when the bandwidth-based Automatic Load Balancing and line backup are combined, bandwidth-based Automatic Load Balancing is one of the features of the TP-Link multi-Wan port Broadband Router." Said Su jianxun.

How many are there two WAN users? Or is it more beneficial?

Generally, the maximum number of bandwidth routers with multiple WAN ports is two. In terms of applications, is it significant to have three or even four WAN ports? Is so many WAN ports a challenge to the performance of the Broadband Router itself? Increasing bandwidth, line backup, and providing more content services can be achieved through multiple WAN ports of the Broadband Router. Obviously, theoretically, the more WAN ports there are, the more advantageous they are. In fact, this is not necessarily the case, and there is also a balance problem. As a matter of fact, this question is also a matter of benevolence and wisdom. Su jianxun believes that the goal of increasing bandwidth in the most economical way has been pursued by many users in China, and many users are not satisfied with the change from 2 M to 4 M, or change from 10 M to 20 M. In addition, in some places, the cost of 10 M Ethernet access is higher than that of 4 2 madsl, and the cost of M access is higher than that of 4 10 m broadband access, this increases users' desire for four WAN ports. In addition, telecom operators provide special services to attract users, such as "interconnect the stars" and "online every day. In this way, with four WAN-port broadband routers, users can apply for multiple types of broadband access at the same time, such as China Telecom, China Netcom, and long-width, so that they can enjoy more special services. Therefore, both two WAN ports and three or even four WAN ports have their users.

Wu Binbin said, "Generally there are two and three, generally 2 ~ The three are more suitable, so there is no need for them. Ruijie's NBR1000 provides two WAN ports, and another module can be expanded. The module can be directly inserted into the optical fiber module, which can omit a photoelectric converter to reduce network fault points ." Huawei 3Com also expressed a similar view. "On the one hand, the performance of the Multi-Wan port Broadband Router is affected by the performance of the router. The performance of the router is good enough to make the multi-Wan port play a role; on the other hand, multiple WAN ports can increase the egress bandwidth, line backup, and provide more content services. In applications, generally two WAN ports can meet the requirements ."

However, three or even four WAN ports are also a challenge to the performance of the Broadband Router. The primary problem is that ultra-many Wan-port broadband routers have high requirements on the performance of the router's hardware, but there is still a lack of high-performance processors on the market, for example, Intel has launched a high-performance network processor based on IntelXscale technology, with a clock speed of up to 266 ~ 533 MHz, it is more than enough to build four WAN port broadband routers.

How many WAN ports are most suitable? Or is it best to see what the user needs? If there are still user needs for broadband routers with three, four, or more WAN ports, these products will naturally be of value. Of course, multiple WAN ports mean a higher price. As long as users can accept the price, the problem will not exist.
