Ian Murdock was born in June 1, April 28, 1973 in the German city of junstan (Konstanz, Germany ). He is the founder of Debian GNU/Linux release and also the founder of Progeny, a commercial Linux publisher. He is currently working at Sun Microsystems, Inc, responsible for Sun's operating system platform development strategy.

Prior to joining Sun, Ian Murdock was the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of the Linux Foundation and chairman of the Linux platform interaction Standard LSB (Linux Standard Base.
