How can I change the working group name and Ubuntu computer name of Samba?

For most Ubuntu users, changing their computer names rarely happens, let alone samba workgroup. Some advanced users may want to learn how to do this easily with Ubuntu.

When it comes to changing the computer name in Ubuntu, we wrote a simple post, which can be found here. Follow this simple guide on how to modify your computer name to achieve your goal.

There may be other ways to change your computer name in Ubuntu, but this is the simplest and fastest. For servers that use the Ubuntu system, you can use the host name and host file edited by vi or vim. Those who do not know the editor may have difficulty using vi or vim.

PressCtrl-Alt-TOpen the terminal to change the Samba Working Group in Ubuntu. When the terminal opens, run the following command to edit the Samba configuration file.

sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

After opening this file, make sure that the word or value of the row starting with the workgroup in the [global] segment is the workgroup you want. For example, if you want the WORKGROUP to become UBGP, replace it with UBGP and save the file. In most cases, you must restart your computer to make it take effect.

The above is how to change your computer name and Working Group in Ubuntu. Remember, if you want to share or Access Windows files and folders, you must install Samba. Without Samba, it is difficult to share files with Windows.

Run the following command to install Samba.

sudo apt-get install samba
