You can use the following command to update a child shoes of a previous version:
Sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-saucy xserver-xorg-lts-saucy
Ubuntu12.04 LTS versions can be extended to 2017. The next LTS version of Ubuntu 14.04 was released in April this year.
