Recently, some new breakthroughs in IP backbone network equipment have paved the way for the future implementation of new Internet services. Vro is a new technology that makes some new Internet services possible. With these new services, you can control network performance, Internet addresses, routes, and network security. Israel's RND network company is a vendor that provides solutions from LAN to wan. The company first proposed the concept of virtual routing.
On a physical router, multiple logical vrouters can be formed. Each vro runs its own route protocol instance separately, they all have their own dedicated I/O Ports, caches, address spaces, route tables, and network management software. Vro provides low-cost dedicated backbone network control and security management. Software for controlling and managing virtual routing devices is modular. If these software runs on real, multi-process operating systems such as UNIX, it also supports multiple instances, that is to say, it can support multiple vrouters at the same time. The processes of each vro are separated from those of other vrouters, and the memory used by the vro is also protected by the operating system to ensure high data security. At the same time, it also eliminates the possibility of data collision with other virtual routers due to imperfect software modules.
When many carrier-level routers are connected to high-speed SONET/SDH networks for grouping and forwarding, hardware is used to achieve line rate performance. For systems that use the virtual routing function, these hardware functions can be logically subdivided, and can be flexibly configured to a dedicated virtual router. The software module with the virtual routing function can completely control the physical ports and exchange paths sent and received by data groups. The size of the group cache and switch table of the vro is limited by the size of the resources it occupies. The reason for this is to ensure that the vrouters do not affect each other. The virtual routing technology enables each virtual router to independently execute the routing protocol software such as OSPF and BGP and the network management software such as SNMP or command line. Therefore, you can monitor and manage each vro independently. The network protocol instance runs independently, so that each vro has a completely independent IP address domain and there is no conflict between them. Each vro can be managed as a separate running entity. Its user-based security module ensures that all network management functions and information of a vro are only available to users with permissions. In addition, the packet forwarding paths of each vro are independent of each other, so that the administrator can separately configure the performance for each vro.
Through a vro, large burst data streams only affect the vro, but not other vrouters. This ensures stable network performance for end users. In addition, the virtual router also provides independent policies and IETFDSInternet Engineering Task Force Differentiated Service) capabilities, so that the virtual router can provide end users with completely customized services. By configuring the I/O port of the vro, you can count the received groups to ensure that the data volume does not go beyond the predefined protocol; at the same time, virtual routers can also allocate data groups to different queues based on different service levels of data groups to achieve different service quality.
Currently, virtual routers have been applied in practice. The Accelar1000 Routing Switch of Nortel uses the virtual routing port to route between VLANs. The virtual router port can be configured with each VLAN to implement routing between IP subnets or VLANs. The Accelar1000 route switch supports vro ports without compromising its performance.
