Microsoft provides us with a lot of things in the Windows XP operating system, but not every function or service is useful to us. So let's take a look at the DIY spirit in the following article, remove all the things we don't need and relieve the pressure on Windows XP, so that it can easily survive the summer.

  1. Delete unnecessary files in the system

(1) Delete system file backup

In the system file "system32 \ dllcache" directory, there are nearly MB of files, which are windows? Windows XP system file backup. When Windows XP system files are replaced, deleted, or modified, Windows XP can automatically extract the corresponding system files and restore them to ensure system stability. The folder cannot be deleted directly. Enter the sfc.exe/purgecache command in the command prompt to clear the file.

(2) Delete drive backup

Delete the driver. cab file under the "Driver cache \ i386" directory in the Windows XP system directory. This file stores the backup of the hardware driver, which is generally not required. You can insert the installation disc of Windows XP into the optical drive even if you need to install new hardware.

(3) Delete useless input methods

In the "WINDOWS \ IME \" folder, files related to input methods are saved. The traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean input methods are useless to most of us, we can delete the "chtime", "imjp8_1", and "imkr6_1" directories, which are traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean input methods, so that we can save 80 mb of hard disk space.

(4) Delete the Help File

In the early stage of Windows XP, the help of the system is very useful, but as you become more familiar with the system, the help files become more and more redundant, you can consider deleting them. XP Help files are stored in the Help folder under the system installation directory. You can delete all the files and directories under them.

  2. Reduce disk space occupied by the System

(1) Disable System Restoration

System Restoration can return the computer to an earlier time (called restore origin) without losing our recent work. However, after a long period of time, it will occupy a large amount of hard disk space. Therefore, it is necessary to manually set it to reduce the disk usage.

Open the "System Properties" dialog box, select the "System Restore" tab in the dialog box, and select the "Disable System Restore on All Drives" check box to disable System Restore. If the system restoration function is not disabled, you can set restoration only for the disk or partition where the system is located. Select the partition where the system is located, click the "configuration" button, cancel the "Disable System Restore for this drive" option in the pop-up dialog box, and set the disk space used for system restoration.

(2) Disable sleep support

The sleep function occupies a lot of hard disk space. If it is used less, close it together. The method is to open the control panel and double-click "power options ", in the displayed "power option properties" dialog box, select the "Sleep" tab and deselect the "enable sleep" check box.

(3) Reduce or disable virtual memory

When the system's physical memory is large, you can consider reducing the virtual memory value or even canceling the virtual memory. When you have MB of physical memory, you can set the virtual memory to half of the physical memory, 256 MB. If you have 1 GB physical memory, you can cancel the virtual memory.

For more information about how to set the virtual memory, see "set the page virtual memory reasonably ".

  3. Clear temporary files

(1) Clear temporary system files

The temporary files of the system are generally stored in two locations: the temp folder under the Windows Installation Directory; the other is X: \ Documents and Settings \ "User Name" \ Local Settings \ Temp folder (X: The partition where the system is located ). Files in both locations can be deleted directly.

(2) Clear Temporary Internet Files

A long period of time on the Internet will produce a large number of Temporary Internet Files, and regular deletion will save a lot of hard disk space.

Open IE, select "Internet Options" from the "Tools" menu, and select the "General" tab in the pop-up dialog box, in the "Temporary Internet Files" column, click the "Delete Files" button. In the "Delete Files" dialog box that appears, select the "delete all offline content" check box and click the "OK" button.

You can also set the disk occupied by Temporary Internet Files to an acceptable range, click "set" in the "Temporary Internet Files" column, and then in the "set" dialog box () set the disk space occupied by the temporary files, or move the folder of the temporary files on the Internet to another partition to reduce the usage of the system partition disk.

  4. File compression in the NTFS partition

Windows XP provides the File compression attribute for NTFS partition files, which can effectively save disk space.

In the NTFS partition, select the file or folder to be compressed, right-click the folder, and select the "properties" command from the shortcut menu, click "advanced" on the "General" tab of the "properties" dialog box, in the new dialog box, select the "Compressed Content to save disk space" check box in the "compression or encryption properties" column, after "OK", you will find that the disk space occupied by the file is greatly reduced.

 5. Clear Windows XP Shared Folders

"Shared folder", which is useful when we use a Working Group. You can directly put the files to be shared in this shared folder without any settings, however, in practice, many people do not need this function. We can disable this function by modifying the Registry to save disk space.

Open the Registry Editor and find the subkey {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee} under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ My computer \ namespace \ delegatefolders }", delete the key value. You are advised to back up the data before deletion, or write down the value so that you can recover the data immediately when necessary.
