Renaming multiple Files

Renaming files is a new and smart feature of Windows XP. Add a comment for a file (apply to NTFS)

Open a folder that contains different files that you want to keep track of; In the View menu, decide to select the current view as details, highlight and right-click the file that you want to add more information to, select Properties in the pop-up menu, and then click the Summary tab (make sure it chooses a simple item instead of an advanced item). Now you can see many comment boxes, including headings, topics, authors, categories, keywords, descriptions, and more. There are other information boxes to choose from when you switch to advanced mode. You can then add comments to all of the items you need. When you're done, click on the toolbar below the file and the address bar to open a drop-down menu where you can select the information you want to display. If you want to sort these files, just right-click in the blanks and then select the item information you like to sort by. Make "explorer" the default action when you double-click a folder

In some cases, using Windows Explorer to browse folders is more convenient than opening each folder to view the contents directly. Click start → My computer, then select tools → folder options → file types, and in the list of file types, select folders and click the Advanced button. Click the "New" button in the dialog box. Click on the "OK" button and go back to the previous window. Select the open item you just created, and then click the Set as Default button. Now, when you double-click on any folder, the Explorer opens automatically.

Turn off the System Folder protection feature

For security reasons, Windows XP has System Folder protection, and when you open some important system folders (such as: C:\Windows\system32), the system does not open the folder immediately, but instead displays a warning window. Get rid of the picture preview feature

Delete thumbs.db file

When you use Thumbnail view in Explorer, Windows automatically generates a file named Thumbs.db in the appropriate folder that caches the pictures in the folder so that the next time you browse is faster, but it takes up some disk space, so you can click tools → Folder Options → view, check "do not cache thumbnails." Then use the search function to find all the thumbs.db files and delete them.

Easily customize the Send to command

There is a "send to" command in the right key menu of the explorer, if you want to modify the commands in its subordinate menu, open the tools → folder Options → View in Explorer, select the Show all files and folders item, and then open C:\Documents and Settings\username\sendto\ (where username refers to your actual account name), where you can delete unwanted shortcuts, or directly right-click the application execution file or folder to drag and drop here, and select "Create a shortcut in the current location."

Close Picture and Fax Viewer

By default, Windows XP uses its built-in picture and Fax Viewer to open all image files, regardless of whether there are other image browsing software installed in your system, if you do not like this feature, you can open the "start" → "Run" in the pop-up dialog box to enter: regsvr32/u Shimgvw.dll.

Get picture information quickly

Tips

Modify Thumbnail size

Windows XP provides image thumbnail display, but if you want to see thumbnails of all the pictures in a folder, you may choose to use other image browsing software, which can also be done well with the built-in thumbnail features of the explorer. This technique can change the size and quality of thumbnails to show more thumbnails and reduce memory and disk footprint. Open Registry Editor, locate [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer], and add a DWORD value in the right pane. and name it: Thumbnailsize, whose value can be set to 32 to 256 (to select Decimal in the Cardinal key when modifying the value), we recommend 50 (the default is 100), which reduces the size of the thumbnail. If you want to change the quality of the thumbnail, continue to add the DWORD value, named: Thumbnailquality, whose value is set to 50 to 100, we recommend that you set it to 50 (select Decimal under Cardinal key when modifying the value). Quit Registry Editor and this change will take effect.

If you want to see a picture in a folder without displaying the filename, hold down SHIFT while you click "View" → "thumbnail", and if you want to display the filename again, just select a different viewing method and repeat the steps above.

Small Tips

If you install Microsoft's PowerToys, you can also use the TweakUI gadget to modify the thumbnail settings, open the program, and then locate and open the "Explorer" item in the left pane, and click the Thumbnails subkey below, This allows you to adjust the thumbnail settings in the right-hand pane.

Disable thumbnail viewing for explorer
