Ballmer's statement was a response to some of the comments made earlier by the open-source community.

According to news reports and online video clips, Ballmer claims: "customers of RedHat companies should at least respect our intellectual property rights and, in a sense, they are obligated to compensate us ."

When asked about the comment on Ballmer, RedHat reiterated that the company's customers were protected by Open Source Assurance Program.

RedHat also said that RedHat is the founder of the Open Protection Network, which provides a patented Security harbor for the Linux environment.

Jim Zemlin, managing director of the Linux Foundation, said it was a pity that Ballmer said that. If Microsoft believes that Linux has infringed its patent, it will file a lawsuit, but in doing so, it must also put its customers on the dock, because many customers use Microsoft products and Linux systems at the same time.

According to a Gartner study, Microsoft's strategy is not to sue, but to seek patent infringement claims to earn more agreements like the agreements it has signed with Novell.
