In the first quarter of 2011, global PC processor shipments grew 7.4% per cent year-on-year, compared with 1.6% in the fourth quarter of 2010, according to a new study published in Thursday by IDC, a market research firm, in the afternoon of May 6, Beijing time. IDC also forecasts that global PC processor shipments grew 10.3% per cent year-on-year in 2011, with annual revenues approaching $43 billion trillion, up 17.6% from a year earlier. "The first quarter is often off season, but this year is different," said Shane Rau, IDC analyst Chene Lau. Both Intel and AMD have shown significant growth in shipments, indicating a good response to their new platform market. Since this is the first full quarter of the Sandy Bridge, Fusion APU listing, it also allows the integrated graphics core (IGP) processor shipments to exceed 50% for the first time. "In the first quarter of 2011, the market share of the manufacturers of PC processors has not changed much compared with the quarter of last 2010 years." Intel has a market share of 80.8%,AMD of 18.9%, and two manufacturers have been flat in the last quarter. VIA Technologies's market share for the first quarter was 0.2%. In the mobile PC processor sector, Intel's market share increased by 0.2% per cent to 86.3%,AMD market share by 0.1% to 13.4%,via, up 0.3%. Intel's market share fell 0.3% per cent in the PC server/workstation processor, but still up to 93.9%,AMD's market share increased by 0.3%, but still only 6.1%. In the desktop PC processor segment, Intel's market share fell 0.1% to 72.4%, while AMD's market share increased by 0.1% to 27.4%. 2011-Year and long-term market outlook in another study, IDC expects PC microprocessors to increase shipments from 10.1% to 10.3% in 2011, a forecast involving mobile, desktop and x86 servers. Chene Lau said: "No accident, the second half of this year's market demand bullish." Japan's earthquake and tsunami have limited impact on the PC supply chain. What the market is really worried about is the impact of the earthquake tsunami on the demand for PCs and processors in Japan. In addition, IDC also first forecasts the different architectures of PC processors shipments, such as x86 architecture and ARM architecture. The agency expects the arm architecture to occupy more than 13% per cent of the market by 2015. (Yong-Hung)
