HTC Hermes USB connector pin config

Enhanced
Mini USB (EMU) connectors are double sided. One side carry's the USB
signal data while the other carries audio signals. The pin config is as
follows.

Data

A = GND
B = NC
C = +DATA
D = -DATA
E = +5v

Pin B is used to recognize original charger when connected to ground (pin A)
One
thing you might want to mention though is that "pin B" in the usb spec
has N/C (ignoring usb2go) the hermes seems to use it to detect charging
source.

Current theory is that it works like this:
If power is detected and a usb connection is negotiated on the data lines, charge.
If
power is detected and a usb connection is not detected, don't charge .
(Theres a bug where it will accept some charge at least the first time
only you connect power, then you have to reset).
If power is detected and usb connection is not detected BUT pin's A and B are bridged then allow 'dumb' charging.

Audio

1 = +Mic
2 = +Right
3 = Switch
4 = Gnd
5 = Gnd
6 = +Left

You
can find Enhanced Mini USB connectors on a variety of devices. The
above config covers the USB configuration of the Orange SPV M3100, HTC TyTN
, Vodafone v1605, HTC Oxygen devices and HTC Meteor devices and probably many more.

You
cannot connect any USB 'slave' device to the M3100, the M3100 simply
doesn't have the necessary hardware to achieve this. All PDA's have
this limitation at the moment, the one exception will be the XDA Flame.
When that is released it will have'USB on the Go' which is a new
technology that will enable external devices to be connected.

If
I plug the USB cable into a HTC device, then plug that usb cable into a
usb port and just wire that up to a bench power supply... the device
draws a few hundred milliamps. (As much as USB spec allows).
This
device, much like other mobile devices I have used which USB charge,
can barely draw enough power of the USB to run itself let alone charge
the battery.

However, if you close the A/B pins you are telling
the phone "This is not a USB port, its a 1A power brick" so the phone
charges the battery at its maximum safe rate.
