until和till兩者都可作介詞、連詞，一般情況下可以互換使用。用於肯定句時，主句的動詞只用延續性的，它所表示的動作一直延續到till或until表示的時間為止，意為“直到……為止”；用於否定句時，主句的動詞一般是非延續性的，也可以是延續性的，它所表示的動作直到till或until所表示的時間才發生，意為“直到……（才）”。如：

She watched TV until / till her mother came back.

她看電視直到她母親回來。（看電視的動作延續到母親回來才結束）

She didn”t watch TV until / till her mother came back.

直到她母親回來她才（開始）看電視。（看電視的動作直到她母親回來才發生）

為了同學們更為系統地掌握它們的用法，現將一些相關知識點作具體的介紹：

1. until和till可以作介詞或連詞。作介詞用時，後面接名詞或副詞；作連詞用時，常用來引導一個時間狀語從句。當它們用於肯定句中，主句動詞常為延續性動詞，表示這個動作一直延續到till / until所表示的時間為止。當它們引導時間狀語從句時往往要用一般現在時代替一般將來時。如：

They worked until / till six o”clock.

他們一直工作到六點鐘。

He will wait for you until / till your mother comes.

他將等你到你母親來。

2. not until / till意為“直到……才”，主句常用終止性動詞（即非延續性），表示until /till所表示的時間一到，該動作就發生。如：

He didn”t go to bed until / till eleven last night.

昨天夜裡他直到十一點才上床睡覺。

She didn”t know me until / till last week.

她直到上一周才認識我。

Einstein was not able to return to his homeland until the war was over.

直到戰爭結束後愛因斯坦才得以回國。

注意：not until放在句首時要用倒裝語序，如上面第三個例句可以改為放在句首的倒裝句：Not until the war was over was Einstein able to return to his homeland.

3. 如果要放在句首，只能用until而不能用till，如：

誤：Till I finished my homework, mother didn”t let me out.

正：Until I finished my homework, mother didn”t let me out.

直到我做完家庭作業媽媽才准我出去。

4. 強調結構中也常常出現not until結構，常見句型為：It is / was not until…that。如下面這個句子：

She didn”t find me until I called her from behind.

直到我從後面叫她之後，她才發現了我。

改為強調結構：It was not until I called her from behind that she found me.

註：但在強調句型中，not until置於句首構成倒裝句以及until放在句首時，均不能用till替換until。例如：

It was not until 1920 that regular radio broadcast began.

直到1920年才開始有週期性無線電廣播。

Not until 12 o”clock last night did Tom come back.（倒裝句）

昨晚直到十二點湯姆才回來。

Until I was 20 I had never been away from my hometown.

我二十歲以前，從未離開過家鄉。
