14.6 Adding disks


14.6.1 adding a shared disk to a local

On the SQLSVR1 server, open the Computer Management console, and follow the steps below to add the shared disk locally.

(1) Bring the disk online

The initial state of the shared disk is "offline". Right-click on the icon for the shared disk and select "Online".

(2) Initialize disk

When online, if the shared disk has not yet been partitioned, its status is displayed as "not initialized." Right-click on the icon for the shared disk and select Initialize disk.

In the Initialize Disk dialog window, select the partition format for the disk. The default is the MBR partition form, which is the type of partition that earlier versions of Windows can recognize.

(3) New Volume

If you do not create an over-the-block (or volume) on the disk, you will need to create a new partition (or volume). Usually we will create a simple volume for the shared disk.

On the Welcome to the new Simple Volume wizard, click the Next button to continue with the following steps.

On the Specify Volume size page, you can specify a value for the volume of disk space that is created by default to create all of the space as a simple volume.

On the Assign Drive letter and Path page, assign a drive letter to the volume.

On the Format Partition page, specify the format of the partition (or volume) for the volume, including the file system, allocation unit, volume label, and so on.

On the Completing the New Simple Volume Wizard page, click the Finish button to begin creating a simple volume.

(4) Confirm

After a partition (or volume) has been created, the status of the disk appears as "online" and displays information such as the drive letter, volume label, file system, and capacity of the current partition (or volume).

On the SQLSVR2 or other node, open the Computer Management console, right-click the icon for the shared disk, and select online. Because shared disks have been initialized, created simple volumes, and so on in the SQLSVR1 server, there is no need to repeat these steps, and the status of the shared disks will immediately appear as "online."



14.6.2 adding disks to the cluster

On the SQLSVR1 server, open the Failover Cluster Manager console, expand the storage node in the tree-like list on the left, select disk, select Actions from the main menu, and then select Add Disk.

In the Add Disk to Cluster dialog window, all available disks that are currently recognized by Cluster Administrator are listed. Select one of the available disks and click the OK button.

After the disk is added, information such as its status, owner node, capacity, and so on is displayed in the disk list.

When the shared disk is clustered, the status of the disk is displayed as "reserved."

In a non-owner node, the clustered disk not only shows a status of reserved, but also a red downward arrow on the disk icon to indicate that the current node cannot use the disk. There is also an informational icon next to the status of hold that moves the mouse to the prompt icon, showing "keep (the disk is offline because of a policy set by the administrator.") If you force "online", an error message pops up, prompting the disk to be managed by the cluster.

14.6.3 moving disks in a cluster

Open the Failover Cluster Manager console, expand the storage node in the tree-like list on the left, select disk, and then select Actions, move available storage, select nodes from the main menu.

In the Move Available Storage dialog window, select a cluster node and you can move the current available storage from the current node to the target node.
