8 situations in which editors are dissatisfied with Web layout design

The words of the translator: widows, orphans, and Mandarin ducks, these scenes are enough to make you want to cry, but when you are in the layout design, you will encounter these problems, and perhaps even more groove. Although today's page typesetting software can automatically handle a lot of things, but this does not mean that you can make the layout beautiful. In this article, we discuss in the text typesetting, some of the most likely problems, some problems you may not be in the design of attention, so that after printing to let you regret infinite. The original author is Charles Purdy.

When you put a big chunk of text in your design for a magazine, brochure, or print ad, it sometimes makes you feel like there's something wrong with that place, but you don't feel the problem (many designers and editors think it's a price a designer has to pay). What we should remember in the design is that the text is not just a cursory appearance, it should be beautiful and easy to read. Beautiful text typesetting has two important roles: first, it can enhance the beauty of your entire design layout. Second, you can avoid a picky editor like me to return the page to a new revision.

In my experience, there are 8 major situations where editors may not be satisfied with your layout design. It sounds quite a lot, but don't worry too much. Most of the problems you can easily solve, such as by adjusting the text size, spacing, adjust the first line, forced line change, or adjust other text settings to solve. In this article, although I am using QuarkXPress software demo, other typesetting software such as Adobe InDesign, Pagemaker can also get similar results.

One, the word beats

If the text you are composing does not attract readers, or makes him feel tired of seeing you, he is not obligated to look at it with a strong spirit. You can try to detect if your eyes are beating too much after you see the headline. Generally speaking, your eyes will see the headline first, and then naturally go to the left to start reading.

Figure 1 The design needs to be readjusted-I will naturally go to the top of the right column to start reading after reading the title, but this is not where this article started.

second, the wrong disconnect

In the editorial vocabulary, "error disconnect" refers to the two lines of text, a word improperly disconnected. Although in English, sometimes a word is always disconnected and transferred to another line, but the person who makes the decision is yourself. When you have to remember a little bit, you can't disconnect anywhere in a word. You can check the dictionary: only in a bit of place is the place that can be disconnected. such as: Mas?quer?ade this word, inside two black spots where you are allowed to disconnect. In addition to this, there are a few things to note:

    • Many publishers believe that if you disconnect a person's name is an impolite way, should try to avoid.
    • If it's on the web, you have to notice that if you use a dash somewhere to disconnect the last word in a row, but if the other displays have different resolutions or display fonts differently, this dash may shift, which can cause confusion when reading, so when designing a Web page, we usually keep it open.

Figure 2 The designer looked up the dictionary and chose the correct position to disconnect and use a temporary dash. It's the right thing to do.

three, the same quotation marks:

When you copy or paste your text (such as the text in your email), you must make the quotes and ellipses consistent, especially when the display design is viewed, make sure you turn the quotes into real quotes and ellipses, because there are some fonts--such as some graphics or symbolic fonts--that are only supported on the computer. will display quotes, but if the viewer does not have the font on the computer, those quotes or ellipses will not be able to look like a stroke, or even make a mistake. So whenever I see quotes suddenly become a gorgeous font, I always have the urge to cry.

Iv. widows and orphans

It sounds a bit callous, but I insist that the designer must destroy the widows and orphans-if they can't do it themselves, I will do it myself. In typography, "widow" refers to the top of a page and leaves an ending sentence. and "Orphan" refers to the last line of words there is only one word. Both of these situations are the enemy of design and must be avoided.

Figure 3 above, the left side is what we call "orphans", and the right side is "widow".
