Data backup and Failure repair: File history

File history

File history is a backup application that continues to protect personal files stored in libraries, desktops, Favorites, and Contacts folders. It periodically scans (by default hourly) The changes in the file system and copies the changed files to another location. Whenever any of your personal files change, a copy of it is stored on a dedicated external storage device of your choice. Over time, the file history will establish a complete history of the changes made to any personal file.

This is a new feature in Windows 8 that can provide consumers with a new way to protect files. It replaces the existing Windows Backup and restore features in Windows 7. What is unique about this approach compared to more traditional backup and restore methods?

Unfortunately, backups are not a very popular application. Our telemetry data suggests that less than 5% of consumer PCs use Windows backup, and that even with all the third-party tools they use, less than half of the consumer PCs are backed up. This makes the user's personal data and digital memory very risky, as any incident can result in data loss. In Windows 8, Microsoft is working to achieve the following goals:

1. Make data protection easy enough so that any Windows user can open it and be completely reassured that their personal files are protected.

2. Eliminates the complexity of setting up and using backups.

3. Turn backup into an unattended, automated service that performs the heavy work of protecting user files in the background without any user interaction.

4. Provides a very simple and attractive restore experience that makes it easier to find, preview, and restore personal files.

In designing the file history, we (Microsoft) learned from past experience and added requirements to meet the changing needs of PC users.

PC users are ever more mobile. To accommodate this situation, we have optimized the file history to better support portable computers that are constantly switching between power states or connecting to and disconnecting networks and devices.

PC users have created more data than ever before and are more dependent on this data than ever before. Therefore, we not only protect what is currently stored on the system drive, but also protect all the work and data created by the user in the past.

When you need a version of a file at a particular point in time (PiT), or even an entire folder, you can quickly find and restore it. The restore application is designed to provide an attractive experience that has been optimized for file browsing, searching, previewing, and restoring.
