Google engineers launched what netizens hoped for over the years: network applications that can work offline.

May 31 International Report: Google engineers have released network applications that Internet users have hoped for over the years: they can work offline.

Google released the Google Gears browser plug-in on Wednesday to allow users to run network programs online or offline.

Google also took the opportunity to announce the source code of Google Gears at the Google developer day.

Linus Upson, Google Engineering director, said that Google Gears aims to create a unified and standardized way to add offline network programs.

The first benefit will be JavaScript developers. Google Gears can be run in Windows IE browser, Windows, Apple and Linux operating systems Firefox browser, and Safari Mac OS browser.

It is expected that the Google Gears program for personal users will be released within one month, with a size of about 1 MB. Google is also preparing to apply to the Standardization Organization to make Google Gears a standard, fully compatible browser plug-in.

Upson said that the reason for launching offline network applications is mainly because users complain that network programs cannot run offline.

With the help of Google Gears, the first program that can run offline is Google's RSS reader Google Readers.

If you have installed the Google Gears plug-in, you can read the RSS content offline and synchronously update the subscribed content when you connect to the network.

Google said that Google Gears has been recognized by the Mozilla Foundation, Adobe and Opera, which means Google Gears will be supported by both Firefox and operabrowser.

By making the source code of Google Gears public, Google hopes to get feedback from developers before such plug-ins are officially launched.

Google Gears is divided into three parts: Local Web servers running in browsers; SQLite, an open-source database for storage, and browser extensions that allow concurrent running of multiple JavaScript tasks.

With this structure, users can use network applications even if they are not connected to the Internet.
