We have entered the e-commerce era. This book will bring you into the world of e-commerce application development. The first chapter of this book introduces the concept of e-commerce and related technical basics, including Internet, Web and Java. Chapter 2 introduces the IBM e-commerce application framework, including WebSphere. Chapter 3 introduces the application development technology of WebSphere Studio. Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 introduce the key technologies of the new generation of Web applications: Java Servlet and JSP. Chapter 6 introduces the next-generation Web application server software: WebSphere application server. Chapter 7 brings you a new generation of Web application programming technology: WebSphere application programming technology. The experiment in the appendix of this book guides you through the process of using WebSphere technology to develop e-commerce applications.
This book is especially suitable for senior information technology students and graduate students, as well as technical personnel engaged in the development of e-commerce applications. Chapter 1 basic e-commerce knowledge
Web is changing all aspects of our lives, but no field has ever experienced a rapid and huge change like a business operation. Many merchants are preparing or are moving towards e-commerce, that is, using Internet technology to transform the key business process. This chapter introduces e-commerce concepts and related technical basics, including Internet, Web, and Java.
1.1 e-commerce philosophy
Since 1970s, many organizations have relied on Electronic Data exchange (EDI) to automate business processing. EDI focuses on standardized transaction processing among business partners, but it lacks flexibility and scalability. In 1990s, with the development of Web technology, especially after the emergence of Java in 1995, many organizations began to use Web application systems to support e-commerce. E-business refers to the use of Internet and related technologies for business activities. an e-business is such an institution, it connects key business systems directly to customers, employees, suppliers, and business partners through intranets, external networks, and Web. To transform an organization into an e-commerce business, you must use Internet technology to transform key business processes, such as customer relationship management, e-commerce, supply chain management, and internal enterprise management. This transformation process is also a process of using Internet technology, information technology, and business technology to transform the business model.
However, e-commerce is not just a technological update. To transform to e-commerce, we must have a clear blueprint for what needs to be done and a clear development guide for achieving this blueprint. The e-commerce cycle model provides a model for enterprises to carry out e-commerce. E-Commerce cycle (see Figure 1-1) consists of four stages, including transformation, construction, operation and utilization. Organizations that want to transform to e-commerce can start at any stage at any time. This is also a repetitive process.
