How can system administrators monitor a large number of machines and services to solve problems in advance to prevent people from being affected by these problems? The answer is Nagios.

Nagios is an open-source software network monitoring tool. This software tool is free, powerful, and flexible. Learning and applying this software is difficult, but IT can reduce the amount of time IT takes to track your organization's IT infrastructure.

In this two-part lecture, I will introduce the usefulness and structure of Nagios. In the second part, I will introduce some configuration examples and give some advice.

To understand the usefulness of Nagios, consider a typical IT infrastructure under the responsibility of one or more administrators. Even a small company has many hardware that runs many services and software. Large enterprises may have hundreds or thousands of hardware devices running. Large enterprises may have non-centralized management services. This means that these non-centralized IT infrastructure cannot see many of these machines physically.

Generally, each hardware device has a unique set of software products running on it. Faced with a variety of hardware and software that needs to be monitored, Administrators cannot pay attention to every specific item. In this case, the default method is to quickly respond to service interruptions. Even worse, the problem occurs only when the end user submits a complaint.

In addition to the obvious public relations problems, it is inefficient to find faults and then handle them. If problems are detected earlier, the fault may be eliminated in a few minutes. If it is found late, troubleshooting may consume a lot of time. For example, the storage space of a database is used up. It is easy to maintain the storage space of the last byte of the hard disk before it is used up. It is difficult to perform maintenance after the system is down due to the failure to write record data.
