Google Desktop Linux Getting Started Guide for Ubuntu

Source: Internet
Author: User

Yesterday, goolge's official release of Desktop Linux was too simple. As a Chinese Google team, how can I deal with this kind of software!

Background:

Google Desktop Search for Linux is a global product developed by Google's Chinese Linux team. Its main members include Liu Xin, Cai Jian, Li Dahai, Liu Li, Lu Zhenyu, and Su zhe (# famous scim author), Wang obviously, Yang runhua, Wang Yonggang and so on (# Well, It should all be famous Daniel. Unfortunately, I only know Su zhe ...).

Body:

Install

Download Google Desktop Linux (select. Deb file) from the http://desktop.google.com/linux/ and double-click to run the package.

In the package installer dialog box, click Install package, enter the administrator password, and press close to close after the installation is complete.

Start

There are two ways to start Google Desktop for the first time:

1. Enter "gdlinux" in the console and press Enter;
2. press Alt + F2 on the disk, enter "gdlinux", and click Run.

In the future, you can use the menu application | Google Desktop to start.

After the first startup, a prompt dialog box will pop up asking if advanced features are enabled, in fact, that is, whether to send anonymous user information to Google to help it improve its functionality (# I have enabled this feature to fully support global software products made in China)

After Google Desktop is started, its icon is displayed in the system notification area (in the upper right corner by default.

Set

Right-click the icon and select the menu item index | index status to view the current index creation (# most of Google Desktop Linux operations are based on browsers, so these interfaces will be displayed in the new page in your default browser ).

Click "desktop Preferences" in the upper-right corner of the page to set the preferences.

On the local indexing tab, you can set the file types and file paths that can be searched by Google Desktop. You can also add folders that you want to search by Google Desktop.

Under the Gmail tab, you can set the associated Gmail account so that you can directly search for emails in Gmail locally. (# Better than online search, further consolidating Google Desktop's position in my UBUNTU)

On the display tab, you can customize display styles that suit your habits, including the number of results in the quick search bar and the number of results on each page.

Currently, the other tab only has the option to enable advanced features, which is the same as the one used to run Google Desktop for the first time.

Finally, don't forget to click Save performance to save your modified settings (then you can close your browser ).

Use

The simplest way is to press Ctrl on the keyboard twice in a row. The Google Desktop Search dialog box is automatically displayed (or hidden ), enter the keywords you want to search (if you are a newly installed Google desktop, the index may still be created in the background, and the results returned by the search may be incomplete ), at the same time, the following shows the closest search results synchronously.

Select see all results in a browser to open the search result page in the browser. The style is very similar to that of the online Google search (# Only these results are local (or in your email) file Content, isn't it nice ?)
