How OS x enables redundant backups with time machines

1 Connect your external memory to your Mac – if it uses a new hard drive, use disk utility to format the hard drive first

2 Click on the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen, select "System Preferences" and select "Time Machine"

4 Ignore the "backup disk" that is already in use, locate your new connected device under "Available Disks", and then tap "Use for Backup"

5 The system will pop up a dialog asking if you want to replace the original backup with a new disk, and you need to select "Use both"

Now the disk you have selected has been used as a backup of the system. Because OS X needs to back up the entire system to the newly added disk, the backup takes a while. You can set up time machine at night so that the initial backup can be done overnight.

Routine backups after the system's first backup are done in the order that you added the backup disks, so if you connect two backup disks on the system at the same time, the system backup will be twice times more expensive: If you use your Mac to render video and do scientific calculations, this may affect its performance; If you are unable to connect to two backup disks at the same time (such as when you use the time machine function in different locations), the system automatically backs up the attached disks. You can back up your system automatically or manually to multiple disks, depending on your usage situation.
