How to find the Normal.dot common template through Word 2003

Before the Normal.dot template is applied to a file, Word 2003 searches for a combination of templates in one of the following three folder locations:

• Installed templates:

C:Program is OfficeTemplates1033.

• User Template path (default folder):

C:documents and Settings application datamicrosofttemplates

• Workgroup Template path:

< > Not set by default

Note Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP support Office 2003. Office 2003 does not support previous versions of Microsoft Windows operating systems.

How to change the user template path and workgroup template path

To change the location of the user template path and the workgroup template path from its default folder to the folder you want to use, follow these steps:

1. Click Options on the Tools menu, and then click the File Location tab.

2. Select the template path that you want to modify, and then click Modify.

3. Locate the folder you want to use, and then click OK.

For information about how to change the template path, click the Microsoft Microsoft Office 2003 Help details on the Help menu, type the location of the template in the Office Assistant or Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topic that you returned.

Installation options: Running from My computer and all running from my computer

If you are using the install from the local computer or running all programs from the computer, Word 2003 Normal.dot the template in the order listed in the following three locations:

• User Template path (default folder):

C:documents and Settings application datamicrosofttemplates

Word 2003 program folder (Winword.exe location):

C:Program is OfficeOffice11.

• Workgroup Template path:

If you use the all installation options running from the local computer or running from My Computer, Word 2003 uses the following method to find the Normal.dot template:

1. In the User Templates folder, Word 2003 searches for the Normal.dot template.

2. If the Normal.dot template is not found in the User Templates folder, Word 2003 searches in the Word 2003 Programs folder.

3. If Word 2003 does not find the Normal.dot template in the Word 2003 program folder, Word 2003 searches the Workgroup Templates folder (if specified).

4. If Word 2003 still does not find the Normal.dot template file, Word 2003 creates a new template in the folder specified by the user template path.

Note that Word 2003 executables, Winword.exe, are installed in the Word 2003 Programs folder. If you want to change the location of the Word 2003 program folder, you must first reinstall Word 2003.

To apply a template to a document, follow these steps:

1. Click New on the File menu.

2. In the Common Templates dialog box, click the General tab, and then click the Blank document. Word 2003 is used by creating a new document or template Normal.dot template.

Installation options: Running from the network and all running from the network

If you use the installation from running from the network or running all programs from the network, Word 2003 searches for the order in which the Normal.dot template is listed in the following three locations:

If you use the Full installation option from running from the network or running from the network, Word 2003 will follow these steps to find the Normal.dot template:

1. In the Word 2003 Programs folder, Word 2003 searches the Normal.dot folder.

2. If the Normal.dot template is not found in the Word 2003 program folder, Word 2003 searches in the User Templates folder.

3. If Word 2003 does not find the Normal.dot template in the User Templates folder, Word 2003 searches the Workgroup Templates folder (if specified).

4. If Word 2003 still does not find the Normal.dot template, Word 2003 creates a new template in the folder specified by the user template path.

Note the Word 2003 executable, Winword.exe, located on a network server in your Word 2003 Programs folder. To change the location of the Word 2003 program folder, your network administrator must reinstall Word 2003 to your network server.

To apply a template to a document, follow these steps:
