How to Use group policies to improve Windows performance

Disable System Restoration

In Windows XP/2003, we can use group policies to disable system restoration. We all know that Windows XP/2003 has a powerful system restoration function, which backs up the changed files and data while the system is running. When a problem occurs, the System Restoration function restores the system to a previous state without losing data. By default, the system is restored to the enabled status. However, there are also some disadvantages, such as reducing system performance and occupying hard disk space. If you do not want this restoration function, you can disable it. Open "Disable System Restore" in "Group Policy console> Computer Configuration> management template> system> System Restore" and enable this policy. After this setting is enabled, you can disable the system restoration function and cannot access the "System Restoration wizard" or "configuration interface ". Of course, you must be careful when performing this operation. Otherwise, the information cannot be restored during incorrect operations.

Disable Automatic Running of Messenger

There are a lot of integrated software in Windows XP/2003 systems. Usually some software also automatically sets the automatic running function, which sometimes adds a lot of trouble to us. Here, Messenger is a typical software. We can set it to not run automatically and open it when necessary. Open "do not run WindowsMessenger" in "Group Policy console> Computer Configuration> management template> Windows Components> WindowsMessenger" and enable this policy.

Disable thumbnail caching

The Windows XP/20003 system has the thumbnail view function. For example, after you open a folder and select a thumbnail, you can see the picture in it. In fact, to speed up the display of thumbnails that are frequently browsed, the system caches the displayed images so that the information in the cache can be directly read the next time it is opened, so as to achieve quick display. However, this will slow down the operation speed and occupy hard disk space in some aspects. You can disable it if you do not need it. Open "Disable thumbnail cache" in "Group Policy console> User Configuration> management template> Windows Components> Windows Resource Manager" and enable this policy.

Faster Internet access

By default, the Windows Network Connection packet scheduler limits the system to 80% of the connection bandwidth, which is not good to some extent. We can use group policies to speed up Internet access. Open "QoS packet scheduler" in "Group Policy console> Computer Configuration> management template> network" and enable this policy, then, use the "Bandwidth limit" box below to adjust the available bandwidth ratio of the system, set it to 0%, and then exit as determined. Then we can use another 20% of the bandwidth, this makes full use of resources.

Disable screen saver during Windows Media Player playback

In some cases, when we are watching a movie, the computer suddenly enters the screen protection status, which is really annoying. Now we can use a group policy to solve the screen protection program so that it will not disturb us. Open "Group Policy console → user configuration → manage template → Windows Components → WindowsMediaPlayer → allow running screen saver in playback" and set it to "disabled.
