I remember that the installation of SQL2000 failed occasionally while I was in contact with SQL many years ago. Every time I do this, I am at a loss. As a result, I became afraid of SQL2000, and sql2005 was used immediately.
I encountered this problem when installing SQL2000 when I reinstalled the system at the company today. I always failed to start the service! Because the company has tasks, it does not have much time to install the system. View the log file as prompted. Prompt: "Install ProgramAn error occurred while configuring the server. Refer to the server error log and c: \ windows \ sqlstp. log to view the file content as "general network errors ". G on Google. Finally, find the cause that has plagued me for years!

This is a SQL Server bug. getcomputername is used to obtain the name of a local computer. The client network library component (dbmslpcn. dll) converts the name to all uppercase letters. The server network library component (ssmslpcn. dll) retains the name returned. Installation fails when the Windows computer name contains both uppercase and lowercase letters or both lowercase letters. A general network error is prompted!

After finding the problem, the solution is easy!
Specific solution: simply change the computer name to uppercase.
