What is a portal?

The Oracle Application Server Portal is a component of the Oracle Application Server. It is used for the development, deployment, management, and configuration of enterprise portal. The oracleas portal combines a portal construction framework with self-service publishing features that enable you to create, publish, and manage information within the portal.

You can use portals to publish information from databases or other sources, collect information from internal customers and external customers, provide them with information, and manage the content they want to use.

A portal consists of a group of pages that contain many different types of content from different sources, all of which are presented only from one location (portal.

The basic portal structure components of the oracleas portal include page groups, pages, tabs, areas, Portlet, and projects.

Page

You can use the page to publish and display content. The oracleas portal page combines a directory folder and a web page. Similar to folders, a page exists in a hierarchy and can contain content. Similar to a Web page, you can access the page through a URL and the page has a user interface (that is, a browser), which allows the page designer to control how information is displayed on the page.

Page Group

Page group, literally, is a group of pages. Each group of pages can be uniquely assigned to different purposes or organizations inside and outside your company. For example, a group of pages can serve the human resources department, and a group of pages can serve the sales department. On the contrary, a page group can serve different organizations. For example, your organization can have a home page group, with some pages dedicated for specific purposes or internal organizations.

Region

In the oracleas portal, the page is divided into some scattered parts (calledRegion). Area is used to define the page layout and accommodate the portal content. You can think of a region as a rectangle that separates the surface area of the page. In these rectangles, you can place images, links, text, files, Portlet, and other content that you want to display on the portal page.

Tab

Adding a tab to a region generates a virtual region stack. You can divide the area into multiple areas on the page and tab to create a page layout.

Templates and styles

The oracleas portal also provides you with a tool to create a custom appearance for the page. It supports the creation and distribution of page templates to help implement a unified appearance. It provides pre-built templates that you can use or customize directly.

It also provides many design tools for creating and applying styles. Style controls the color, Font, and background of the page and its content. You can apply a style to the entire page, or to one or more areas on the page.

Item and Portlet

The content you put on the page can be divided into two types: item and Portlet:

  • Items include links, PL/SQL components, different types of files (such as HTML, word processing, zip, etc.) and other types of objects. Such as links to another page, images of your company logo, or static text displayed, are all so-called projects.
  • A Portlet is a reusable information component that summarizes or provides portals for different types of information sources. Such as dynamically updated quarterly revenue reports, search fields and buttons, or simple user surveys, these are called Portlet.

Project attributes and Portlet attributes

When you load content to a portal, you can also enter useful information related to the content. You can enter information such as the author's name, content expiration date, or other useful information of any type. This information is calledAttribute. Each project type in the oracleas portal comes with a default property set. You can add your own properties to this set to create a custom project type.

Category and view

CategoryAndViewAre two common attributes. Categories and views help you classify the content added to the portal. For example, when you upload a file, you can specify a category for it, which indicates the type of information contained in the file (suchBenefits). You can specify multiple views, which indicate different viewers who may be interested in the file content, suchSupervisor,ManagerAndIndividual contributors.

This is only a possible use of categories and views. There are endless opportunities to creatively apply these attributes.

Combined with the custom search Portlet, you can use categories and views to automatically find and publish all the information in the portal related to a specific topic or for a specific information recipient.
