Lee Kai-Fu, vice president of Google worldwide and president of Greater China, said yesterday that joining Google was his second choice, before joining Google, he tried to start a university and run a different school in China with Western ideas, but he did not succeed. (Bytes)

The following is a transcript of the dialogue between Kai-fu Lee and the conference host:

HOST: Next I will introduce a doctor. The doctor came to Beijing by himself. He selected a place in Huangzhuang, Haidian and wanted to build a research institute, later, he met two young reporters from the IT manager world at the construction site. The doctor who came to Beijing 10 years ago was Mr. Lee Kaifu, mr. LEE Kai-Fu, vice president of Google and president of Greater China, is invited. Yes. Do you still remember the reporter who interviewed you that year?

Kaifu: I may remember that two very young and talented reporters are a little fat and thin.

HOST: when you first arrived in Beijing, you had a novel idea. What kind of belief did you come to Beijing?

Kaifu: At that time, I was wondering if there were so many smart and outstanding young people in China who could bring in some good foreign ideas, some good corporate culture, or create a world-class research institute.

HOST: You need to include these very competent people under your institution.

Kaifu: in fact, no matter at Microsoft or Google, I am very lucky to be surrounded by very smart people. In fact, we are back to what Mr. Sun once said just now, how do you want to be managed, how should you manage your subordinates? We are very smart researchers and engineers. I think they hope that their first job will influence the world. The second is that they have the right to decide what they want to do. Third, it is hoped that leaders can have a deep understanding of where their strengths are, so that their contributions to the company can have a sufficient impact. So I think if you understand these three points as a leader, you should create an environment for them to have a lot of space to play, and then delegate power to every researcher as much as possible, engineers are working on their most enthusiastic projects. Then, your job is to provide support, provide a culture for them to make full use of their talents, and describe their company strategy to them, however, if you want them to be passionate about themselves and make contributions to the company, you must be able to fully understand where their contributions are and then reward them.

HOST: You have been dealing with this time, because the IT industry is a young man's industry. You have also seen the growth of China over the past 10 years, because you have been able to provide them with a career and support questions. This is your idea, but over the past 10 years, do you think China's young people have changed?

Kaifu: I think the change is very great. I remember that when I went back to China 10 years ago, I barely hired 20 people. In fact, they didn't meet all the requirements of the company at the time, however, we gave them a chance to prove themselves within two years before they could develop for a long time. We didn't specifically say that at that time, there was a fact that, most of the 20 people have done quite well, but they are very thoughtful, but their training and their education are far from comparable with that of international companies. However, when I returned to China after Google, over the past two years, we found that there were a lot of excellent talents in China, at least one hundred people can meet the requirements of our world-class Talents. I think we can have more options, go abroad, or other paths. Therefore, we find that the improvement of this talent is amazing, so we are very pleased with this regard. They can grasp the latest international trends, whether they have passed through their universities, I learned from the internet and other places.

HOST: I live next door to you. I also feel that the current young people are changing rapidly. An important reason that affects them is the Internet. Can you look forward to the future of the Internet in China, what will happen to the search engine?

Kaifu: Let's talk about these young people first. I think they actually rely heavily on the internet because they have found a new knowledge on the Internet, they are daring to send emails directly to foreign experts and get their guidance. They also participate in international programming competitions through the Internet, so the Internet is of great help to them, today, we know that the Internet can help us find vast amounts of information, and we can get such information from Google through the search engine. However, in addition, I think the entire computing layout in the future will go from PC-dominated to a so-called gathering age. I think the gathering age has changed a lot in China, as you can imagine, when a PC falls to the ground, data may fall. I don't worry, but now I am on the cloud, and all the information is stored on the Internet. Of course, I have other options. If I don't need a PC in the future, I will use a mobile phone, I will use my TV, and all the cars I use will be able to access information, so such a cloud computing does not need to know where the computer is located, however, it can store our information without mistakes. I think this is the biggest change. This is also a computer scholar, including providing a greater opportunity for everyone here.

HOST: is it possible for you to fulfill your dream of running a university with such technological developments?

Kaifu: the dream of running a university seems to be not enough in the past. As you know, I came to Google because I tried to start a university and failed, google was my second choice at the time. Of course, Google was still very good, but at that time, I had the idea of creating a university, that is, whether or not I could use the idea of running a school in the West to find a group of world-class masters, find the world masters who especially think of China and be able to set up a different school in China with Western ideas. I have no such dream now. Now I have seen great progress in both Tsinghua and Peking University, I think what China's education needs more is how to pass on the excellent Tsinghua University Education faster, so that the tenth, one hundred, and one thousand universities can also provide good technology.

HOST: You can use the media and IT manager world to convey your ideas?

Kaifu: of course, after going through the Internet and going through the IT manager world is a very good channel. In particular, the IT manager world has a lot of articles that can be deeply thought-provoking. I think it is also really good, like me, I am very hopeful and can help me. Thank you.
