Microsoft started developing. NET initially in the late 90. NET is not called. NET, but "Next Generation Windows Services" (NGWS). Then why did Microsoft rename it? Net? This strange name is even too inconvenient for search engines to index.
Why Microsoft's renaming itself is a mystery, and here's the most reliable answer I've collected:
For the first time, .net has made it possible for Microsoft's salespeople to announce to the public that they have their own network technology, as well as to fight the Lightning Wars of Sun Microsystems, which declared "the network is the computer". On the other hand, ". com" is also almost synonymous with network, while ". NET" is the imitation of it. Of course I don't think there is a problem with the name, the problem is that Microsoft has used ". Net" prefix for too many products, such as ". NET My Services" and ". NET Enterprise Servers", but the latter has little to do with the internet! These have caused a lot of confusion, so that Microsoft will later. NET limits for managing software frameworks related to technology-specific naming. --stanley Siu
I was a developer at Microsoft, but I'm not sure which idiot gave it the name! All the people I have communicated do not think it is a good name, no matter from the angle of view! But it can be read at least compared to NGWS. --george v. Reilly (Microsoft Senior Engineer)
The early marketing department thought it was a set of Web services. NET is "assumed" to be a tool for simplifying the design and use of Web services. Even it was "assumed" to be a simple call to Microsoft's forthcoming service, and then everyone could simply use ". NET My Services". Of course, everyone soon found out that this was a misunderstanding, but the. NET name passed down, at least it feels better than "com++" and "Activexx". --john Saunders (Microsoft MVP)
The question was also found in the StackOverflow, a technical question and answer forum, but was recently considered to have been removed from the site's theme (it is not a technical issue). But don't know why, StackOverflow again this q&a, you can now see all the answers here.
