Server | Personal Server | Introduction for different environments, users can start Windows Server setup in different ways, and the following describes starting the installer in different environments.
1. On the computer running Windows, start Setup from the CD-ROM step 1 to insert the disc into the drive.
Step 2 to start the installation, do one of the following:
§ Wait for Setup to display the dialog box for computers running any version of Windows that are higher than Windows 3.x.
For computers running Windows 3.x, use the file Manager to go to the CD drive and enter the I386 directory. Then, double-click Winnt.exe.
Note: If you are running Setup on a computer running Windows 3.x or MS-DOS, use the disk cache for maximum efficiency. Otherwise, the installation process (starting from Winnt.exe) will take a long time. The usual way to enable disk caching on computers running Windows 3.x or MS-DOS is to use Smartdrive.
2. Start Setup from the network Step 1 on a network server, you can share the installation files either by inserting the disc and sharing the CD drive, or by copying the installation files from the I386 folder on the CD to the shared folder.
Step 2 Connect the shared installer files on the computer on which you want to install Windows 2000:
§ If you share a CD-ROM drive, you can connect to the shared drive and go to the I386 folder.
§ If you want to share a folder, you can connect to that folder.
Step 3 Locate and run the file on the CD-ROM I386 folder or a shared folder:
§ Run Winnt.exe on a computer running MS-DOS or Windows 3.x.
Run Winnt32.exe on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 3.51, Windows NT 4.0, or any version of Windows 2000 computer.
