Preferences for Windows Server 2008

A preference is a pattern applied by Group Policy, and unlike Group Policy, the policy of a preference deployment after the client computer has taken effect, the client computer logon user can adjust the policy for the preference deployment as needed, and the domain Policy client computer for the Group Policy deployment cannot be modified.

Preference attributes

Preferences and Group Policy are different and have the following characteristics:

L Mandatory. Preferences are not mandatory; the logged-on user can be configured initially, but the end user can change the state of the client computer as needed.

• flexibility. You can add any registry value, file, or folder to a managed Group Policy object by using a preference item. Preferences are built on XML and can be easily exported to other Group Policy objects.

L Registration Form. All registry entries can be controlled, even if the target computer or user is no longer in the scope of Group Policy object management that configures the registry values. You can delete a registry value when a Group Policy object no longer has an impact on the target object.

L goals. Each preference setting provides more than 25 different target filters for the control operation. There are many examples of filters, such as user matching, security group membership, and registry value matching.

L user interface. The user interface for preferences is extremely simple and easy to use compared to other settings in the Group Policy object. In most cases, the configuration interface in a Group Policy object is exactly the same as the actual configuration interface of the hungry operating system on which the client computer runs.

Client computer Components

A client computer operating system that supports preferences, the functionality provided by Windows Server 2008 can be supported only if the Windows Server 2008 Group Policy Preference Client extension is installed. For different client operating systems, different components need to be downloaded separately. After the download is complete, you can deploy the extension components to the client computer through Group Policy or a single installation.
