Selection of package groups

When the partition is selected and formatted as configured, you can select the package to install.

Unless you choose a custom installation, the installer will automatically select most packages for you.

For example, if you want to perform a personal desktop installation, you will see a screen similar to the following:

To select a single package, select the Customize Package collection to install check box. For further instructions on it, see the other chapters.

You can select a package group (e.g., "x window System) that is categorized according to the function, a single package, or a combination of both.

To select a package group, click the check box next to it (see Figure 3-26).

Select each component that you want to install. Selecting "All" in a custom installation (at the end of the component list) installs all packages included in Red Hat Linux.

Once you have selected the package group, click Details to see which packages are installed by default, and you can add or remove optional packages from the group.

To select a single package, tick the "Select a single package" check box at the bottom of the screen.

3.16.1. Select a single package

Once you have selected the package group you want to install, you can select or deselect individual packages with the mouse (see Figure 3-28).

You can view a single package in the tree view.

The tree view allows you to view packages that are categorized by application type.

The flat view allows you to view all packages in alphabetical order on the right side of the screen.

Using the tree view, you will see a list of package groups. When you select a group by expanding the list (by double-clicking the folder arrow next to the package group name), the list of packages within that group appears in the Panel on the right. The flat view allows you to see all the packages in alphabetical order on the right side of the screen.

To sort the packages alphabetically, click the "Package" tab. To sort the packages by size, click the Size (MB) tab.

To select a single package, double-click the check box next to the package name. The symbol inside the box means that the package has been selected.

To learn more about a given package, tap the name of the package. Information about it will appear at the bottom of the screen.

You can also select or deselect all packages listed in a group by clicking on the "Select All Group" button.
